STOVE FOR HEATING AND COOKING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 833, dated July 31, 1837.
To all whom t may concern K Be it known that I, RUFUs S. PAYNE, of West Springfield, in the county of Hamp` den and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Stove for Heating and Cooking; and I do hereby declare the following is a full and exact description thereof.
This stove will be most conveniently made 0f cast-iron. The fireplace, or furnace part, A, is to be made in a round, square, or other form, as may be preferred, and may be adapted to the burning of either wood, or coal. It rests upon the bottom plate ofthe stove G, Gr; and extends to the top platev E, E, where it. has an opening for the introduction of fuel, or the reception of a kettle, or other cooking utensil; this furnace part stands disconnected from the oven, and from the other parts of the stove, excepting by .the top and botto-m plates, and by the flues to be presently described; it has an ash-pit, and a feeding door in front, made in the usual manner; its height may be about eighteen inches, or that which is just sulficient for the convenient management of the fire.
On each side of the furnace there is a vertical column, B, B, extending also from the lower to the upper plate of the stove, each of which columns constitutes a descending flue, and a receptacle for cooking utensils. These columns may be about six, or
eight, inches in diameter at their lower ends, but they are enlarged at top, to allo-w of the admission of kettles, &c., there being a perforation through the top plate, over each of them, for that purpose.
From the upper end of the furnace a flue C, C, leads lat-1 erally, into each of these columns,`admit ting the heated air from the lire'ito'pass into them, whence it descends to their lower ends, passing thence along a Hue D back of them, and in contact with the lower plate, for the purpose of heating an oven which extends from side to side of the stove, behind the furnace and the two side columns. The front plate of this oven is'single, but the bottom, back, and top are double, forming flat flues for the `circulation of the heated air, which enters through the lower flue D, from each of the side columns, in the manner described, ascends at the back, and escapes at a pipe in the top plate of the stove, leading into the space between that top plate, and the top plate of the oven.
Besides the flues leading fro-m the furnace into each of the side columns, there is another, F, governed by a valve leading di- -rectly back to the stove pipe, and similar flues at the upper ends of each of the sideV columns, which may be opened when the oven is not to be heated, in a manner well known in other stoves.
What I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is"- rlhe particular arrangement of the furnace and side columns, so as to adapt them to the purpose of cooking, as well as of' heating, combining them together, and with the oven, in thespecial manner herein set forth.
