APPARATUS FOR COOKING.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,918, dated December 28, 1840.

Be it known that I, JOSHUA GRIME, of Beekmantown, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new Cooking-Closet; and I do hereby declare that the following; is a full and exact description thereof.

The nature of my invention consists in substituting' a tight closet for the ordinary chimney place in which cooking' is usually carried on.

To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use the invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I build in the jambs of the chimney A, A, mason work B, B, about fifteen inches high leaving' an ash hole and place for the draft Gr, which extends back under a cylindrical or other hole or fireplace F, about eight inches in diameter; in the bottom of which a grate of any description is fastened-this hole F, may be about siX inches from the front over F, a` tube L L with a conical end is fastened in any convenient manner to carry off the gas from the fire through M. The flue of the chimney is built across with brickwork between two and three feet above the bottom E, E, according' to the size required, except that there is an opening` H, left which leads directly into the flue of the chimney. This opening' would be best placed about four inches from the front of the iue and in the center of it and has an ordinary sliding' damper to close it with metallic bars K, K, of any form are built into the j ambs or otherwise fastened there in any convenient manner. On these bars, plates D, D, are laid for t-he purpose of sustaining the different articles required to be cooked. Some articles may be placed on the bottom E, E; space must be left between the plates to allow a draft. Cast iron or other doors made of incombustible matcrials and of sufficient thickness to retain the heat are fastened to the front of the ambs in any convenient manner.

In the drawing' a portion of the brick work is removed to show the opening and damper H. Instead of a chimney flue a pipe may be set on at H.

In order to us-e this closet for boiling', roasting, &c., a fire made in F, the damper H, is opened, the articles are placed on the diterent shelves or plates D, I), or on the bottom E, E. accordingto circumstances, the doors O, C, are closed, and in a remarkably short time the cooking' or heating' will be accomplished.

In order to bake the closet must be heated as is usual with ovens and the damper H must be closed (there being' an opening at M) when the article to be baked is put linthe fuel in all cases must be anthracite coal.

I/hat I claim as my invention and for which I desire Letters Patent, is-

The combination of a chimney flue, or other conve-nient means to create a draft and carry off the smoke, gas, &c., with a closet constructed with the opening G, the fire place F, and the opening` and damper H, the whole being' constructed substantially as above described.
