E. E. BRADLEY.
SPINDLE.
NA PETERS. Pmmmhgmpher. washing ucv UNITED 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD E. BRADLEY, OF STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE DRAPER 8U SONS, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPINDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,914, dated January 5,1886.
Application filed April 21, 1884. Serial No. 128,745. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWARD E. BRADLEY, of Stonington, county of New London, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Spindles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to that class of spindles which is composed of two parts, one part having an attached sleeve-whirl, while the other part carries the bobbin.
My invention consists, essentially, in aspindle provided with a sleeve-whirl and a supporting-case therefor, combined with a bobbincarrying spindle having an attached foot secured to the sleeve-whirl loosely, and with an interposed indiarubber or flexible packing, as will be described.
Figure 1 represents in elevation the two parts of my improved spindle, the supportingcase, the rail, and parts attached to the spindles being in section; and Fig. 2 is a like View of a modification.
The spindle A, placed in the bushing ct' in the supporting-case B, secured to the rail C, has attached to it a sleeve-whirl, D. The upper end of the sleeve-whirl is provided with an india-rubber or yielding packing, b, and has secured to it by screws d the foot c of the bobbincarrying spindle E, the spindle A thus driving spindle E, the diameter of the screwholes in the foot being greater than the diameter of the screw d, so that the bobbin-carrying spindle may tip or turn sufficiently, as is well understood, topermit it to center itself to its load. This foot c has a sleeve, c2, which is extended downwardly about and to more or less inclose the sleeve of the whirl, and, preferably, as represented in Fig. l, the lower end of the sleeve c2 will be provided with an elongated collar, as at c3, between which and the sleeve of the whirl is interposed a piece of indiarubber or other yielding packing, h, which affords the spindle E an opportunity to center itself. In some instances, the packing h being employed, the washer b may be omitted. The interior of the sleeve c2 and the exterior of the upper end of the sleeve of the whirl are of such relative diameter that the interior surface of the said sleeve cl and the exterior of the sleeve of the whirl do not touch when the bobbin-carrying spindle is in true central position, the space between the said surfaces to be operative for the purpose stated requiring to be not more than one one-hundredth of an inch.
In the drawings the space referred to is shown exaggerated; but in practice it will be understood that the said space is too small to be easily discernible.
A spindle divided into two parts 'and combined as described and represented is undisturbed by the strain or pull of the band, and may be run very steadily. If desired, the sleeve c2 may be shortened, as in Fig. 2, and the packing h be omitted.
In another application, No. 128,744, filed concurrently herewith, lhave shown the sleeve attached to the bobbin-carrying spindle as extended dcwnwardly about the sleeve of the whirl, and also a exible washer or packing interposed between the top of the sleeve of the whirl and the foot ofthe bobbin-carrying spindle of the whirl, but have not therein claimed such features, reserving them for this patent.
I am aware that a whirl-spindle has had a projection to enter a notch at thelower end of a bobbin-carrying spindle, as in United States Patents Nos. 255,074 and 288,230.
The supporting-case may be supplied with oil in any usual manner.
I claiml. The supporting-case, spindle A, and its attached sleeve-whirl, combined with the bobbin-carrying spindle having a foot and attached sleeve, the latter being extended downwardly about the sleeve of the whirl, and with means to connect the parts to effect the rotation of the bobbin-carrying spindle from the spindle A, substantially as described.
2. The supporting-case, spindle A, and its attached sleeve-whirl, and the bobbin-carry ing spindle E, and its foot and downwardlyextended sleeve, combined with the packing h, interposed between the sleeve of the spindle E and the sleeve of the whirl, substantially as described.
3. The supporting-case, the spindle A, its attached sleeve-whirl, and the bobbin-carrying spindle provided with a foot and a sleeve, combined with an elastic washer interposed between the lower end of the said foot and the top of the sleeve of the whirl, and with means to effect the rotation of the bobbin-earrying spindle from the spindle A, substantially as 5 described.
4. The supporting-case, the spindle A, and its attached sleevewhirl, and the bobbin-carryng spindle E and its attached foot, combned with the elastic washer interposed be- Ic tween the foot of the spindle E and the upper end of the sleeve of the whirl, and with screws Z in holes of greater diametei` in the said foot, substantially as described.
In testimony 'whereof have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- I 5 seribing witnesses.
EDVARD E. BRADLEY. Witnesses:
