, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS MAYOR, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
VSPINDLYE FOR SPINNING AND TWISTING MACHINES- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,486, dated January 17, 1862 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MAYOR, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in'Spindles for Spinning and Twisting Machines; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a spindle particularly adapted for spinning-machines,showing the bottom of the bolster provided with a coiled spring and weight. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the spindle, the bolster of which is provided with a suspended weight. a y
The practice in spinning and twisting has fully demonstrated that the bolster of a spindle which is to be run ata high speed must be able to yield to the tendency of the spindle to it adjust itself to the axis of the revolving load,
and it has also demonstrated that such yielding must ber'esisted by some springy material. When the bolster is supported by a ball and socket placed on a line with the whirl, the pull of the hand does not afl'ect the spindle, and this disturbin'gelement may in this case be left out of consideration, and as the bolster oscillates on the hall-and-socket support resistance to limit the oscillation may he placed at either end.
Application filed May 9, 1881. (No-model.)
issecured in any suitable manner, and here shown by means of a set-screw. Between the weight 6 and the bolster-case cthe coiled sprin g dis placed, which exerts adownward force, and also forms a lateral resistance, limiting the 0s cillation of the bolster and resisting the draft of the yarn to be twisted when exerted on the upper end of the bobbin, thus retaining the spindle in its proper position without rigidly confining it to the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the socketed bolstercase and the bolster provided with the hall intermediatelyof its length and fitting in the socketot' said case, of the weight e, secured to forth.
THOMAS MAYOR.
