To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. OREILLY, of Canandaigua, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved gate which can be opened or closed from either side of the gate and is locked automatically, and which gate is simple in construction, strong, and durable.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which is shown a perspective view of my improved farmgate.
The two gates A A are hung on the two posts B B, in the usual manner, to swing toward and from each other. At each side of the gate a post, 0, is erected in line with the post B, and each post 0 is provided with an arm, D or D, from each of which two pulleys, I, project downward at the free end,'and a pulley, E, projects from the inner side. A bar, F, is passed through an apertured lug,
.13", held on the inner side of the hinged post of one gate, is passed through an aperture in the top bar of the said gate, is then passed through a notch in the upper end of said hinged gate-post, and has its upper end bent to form a loop or eye, F. Ropes J and K are secured to the loop or eye F formed on the rod or bar F. The ropes J pass from the eye F directly over the pulleys I, hang down from the same, and have weights K secured on their ends. The ropes K are also secured to the eye F, passed through one pulley E, then back through the eye F and over a pulley, I, and the arm D or D opposite the one on which the pulley E is secured, through which it has been passed. Weights K are also secured on the ends of the ropes K. A rope J and a rope K are thus at each side of the gate. The bar F has its lower end bent, and

lever, N, pivoted on the gate at the swinging end, said angle-lever being connected with a sliding bolt, P, on the bottom of the swinging post of the gate A, the said bolt being pressed downward by a spring in the casing of said bolt. A block, Q, is secured in the roadway, and is provided in its top with an aperture for receiving the lower end of the bolt P. A rod, R, projects downward from the hinged post of each gate, and on the lower end of each rod R a grooved pulley, S, is mounted, and over each pulley S a chain, T, is passed, the said chains being united by crossed rods U, passed through a box, W, embedded transverscly of the roadway under the gates.
The operation is as follows: By pulling either rope J the rod F is turned sufficiently to move the angle-lever N such a distance as to raise the bolt P, whereby the gates are re leased. By further pulling on said rope J the gates are swung in the direction from the person. After the person has passed he pulls the rope K, whereby the gates are swung back again and closed. The bolt P snaps into the aperture in the block Q, and thus the gates are locked.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a gate, of the bar F on the hinged end of the gate, which bar F is mounted to turn slightly and has its upper part bent, a bolt connected with said rod, and ropes connected with the upper bent part of said rod, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the standards 0, of the arms D and D on the same, pulleys J and E on said arms, a gate, the bar F on the gate, a bolt on said gate connected with said rod or bar, which bar has its upper end bent, and ropes passed over the pulleys on the arms D D and connected with the rod F, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the posts 0, of arms on the same, pulleys on the arms, the hinged gates A A, means for connecting the gates together, the rod F on the hinged end of one gate and provided at its upper end with abend, forming an eye, F ropes secured to the eye, passed over pulleys, and hanging down from the arms, and ropes secured 5 to the eye, passed over a pulley on one arm, then back through the eye and through a pulley 0n the opposite arm, and then hang ing down, and a bolt on one gate, which bolt is connected with said rod, substantially as herein shown and described.
