UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE \V. MUNSHOWVER, OF BOWLING GREEN, OHIO.
FOOT-REST FOR RECLlNlNG-CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,659, dated January 5, 1886.
Application filed October 7, 1885. Serial No. 179,246. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE IV. MUN- SHOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowling Green, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension Foot-Rests for Reclining-Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in extension foot-rests for reclining-chairs; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of areclining-chair providedwith my improved foot-rest. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed perspective views. Fig. 5 is a detailed sectional view on the linexxof Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 3 y of Fig. 2.
A represents a reclining-chair, which may be of any preferred construction. On the under side of the bottom of the chair, at the sides thereof, are secured guides B, having inward lyextending tongues G.
D represents arectangular frame composed of the longitudinal side bars, (2, which are made of iron, and transverse connecting end bars, 01, which are made of wood. In the outer sides of the side bars are made grooves (1*. The frameD slides under the bottom of the chair, the tongues O entering the grooves d, to guide the frame as it is moved back or forth. Stops E depend from the under sides of the side bars near their inner ends.
F represents metallic brackets having vertically-extending shanks f, which extend up through the chair-frame at the front side thereof, the upper ends of these shanks being screwthreaded to receive clamping-nuts f, for securing the brackets in place. The brackets have outwardly extending shoulders f at their upper ends, through which pass screws f that enter the under side of the chair-frame, and at thelower ends of the brackets are formed inwardly-extending tongues f that enter under the side bars of the extension sliding frame to support the latter.
G represents a foot-rest, that is supported in the frame D. The outer sides of this footrest are rabbeted on their upper sides, and these rabbeted portions are covered by metallic straps H, forming grooves I in the sides of the foot-rest.
In the inner sides of the outer ends of the side bars of the frame D are made recesses d Metallic straps d are secured on theinner sides of the side bars, and are bent around the ends of the front cross-bar and secured thereto. Hinge-plates L are pivoted at their lower outer corners in the recesses (1 and said hinge-plates have inwardly-extending tongues Z at their upper sides, that enter the grooves I in the foot-rest, to guide the latter as it is drawn out from or pushed into the frame D, and from the lower edges of the said hinge-plates depend guide-extensions Z, having bent stops Z at their lower ends, which serve to limit the angle at which the foot-rest may be turned when the frame D is extended. By this construction it will be seen that the frame D may be extended from the bottom of the chair, and that the footrest slides in the frame and is capable of being tilted and extended outward to any desired angle or length therein, thus forming a pleasant support for the feet or the lower portions to receive the tongues, and the brackets F,
having the tongues f at their lower ends, the threaded shanks f, and the shoulders j", as set forth.
3. The combination, with the chair, of the extensible frame D, the foot-rest G, having grooves I, the plates L, hinged to the frame D, and fitting at their upper edges in the grooves Land having stops Z provided below the frame D, to limit the inclination of the foot-rest, as set forth.
4. The combination of the chair, the extensible frame D, secured to the bottom thereof,-the In testimony that I claim the foregoing as grooved foot-rest in the frame, and the hinge my own I have hereto affixed my signaturein plates pivoted to the frame and having the presence of two Witnesses.
'tongues entering the grooves in the foot-rest, GEORGE W. MUN SHOWER. 5 and the depending extensions having" the stops Witnesses:
for limiting the angle to which the footrest FRANK A. BALDWIN,
may be inclined, substantially as described. MORRIS VVALKER.
