UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
FRITZ MINK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMMODE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,321, dated December 29, 1885.
Application tiled April l1, 1885. Serial No. 161,925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ MINK, of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, a subject of Prussia, having resided one year last past in the United States, and made oath of intention to become a citizen thereof, have vinvented a new and useful Improvement in Commodes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which-` Figure l represents a vertical sectionl of a commode embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section in line x x, Figs. l and 3. Fig. 3 represents a top view there of.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a novel locking device for the lid of a commode when open.
It also consists of the construction of arms to which the arm-rests are pivoted.
It further consists of a novel buffer acting as a stop to the lid when violently closed.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the boX or body of a commode; B, the lid thereof, and C the arm-rests, which, eXcepting as far as the features of my invention are concerned, are of well-known form.
D represents the arms, hinged to the back of the body A, and extending forward toward the front of the boX at the sides thereof, and to the same are pivoted or jointed arms E, which are connected with the arm-rest C.
Projecting inwardly from the sides of the body A, at the top thereof, are lugs F, and pivoted to the arm D is a gravitating catch, G, the nose H of which is below. The lugs F and catch G are so disposed that when the arm D is raised the lug is in the path of motion of said catch and the catch is accordingly forced back, and when it clears the lug it drops thcreagainst and supports the lid and connected parts in open position, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. By throwing back the catch it is cleared of the lug F, and thus releases the arm D, whereby the lid may be lowered and closed, its connected parts then entering the body A, as seen by the dotted lines, Fig. 1. I When the lid is open, the arm D abuts, against the 1u g F, and thereby limits the opening motion of the lid, and relieves the hinges (No model.)
thereof of the strain due to pressure imparted to said lid by the back of the occupant of the commode. The arms D are of arched form, whereby they are strong and durable, and may be made of cast metal or other suitable material. To the back of the body A, at the upper end thereof, are secured buffers J, formed of blocks or heads K, of soft rubber or other suitable or elastic and flexible material, connected with the upper end of thejstcm L, the latter being arranged vertically and fitted in guides or brackets M, which are attached to the body, said brackets containing springs N, which force the stem upwardly, it being noticed 6 5 that when the lid of the commode is open the heads of the buffers project above the seating portion of the body, and that when the lid is lowered it strikes said head, and as the buffer yields the lid is prevented from closing violently on the seat, thus avoiding noise and possible injury to the fingers of the person retaining hold of the lid. The location of the buffers is near the hinges of the lid, so as to act with greater resistance and more prompt- 75 ness when the closing lid strikes the same, the weight ofthe lid, however, being sufficient to overcome the buffers and remain promptly closed when the commode is not in use.
Having thus described my invcntion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A commode having side arms hinged to the body there-of and provided with gravitating catches, arm-rests secured to the lid thereof and connected to said hinged side arms, and lugs on the sides of the body, substantially as described.
2. A commode having side arms, D, provided with catches G,armrests G,having arms E, side arms, D, and lugs F on the body of the boX, the said arms E being connected to said arms D, substantially as described.
3. The body A, in combination with lid B, having arm-rests C with arms E, hinged arms D, having gravitating catches G, and lugs F, said arms E and D being connected, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
