No. 459,609.. Patented Sept. 15, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANQOIS LOUIS ANTOINE CANARY, OF DRAGUIGNAN, FRANCE.
DOG-MUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,609, dated September 15, 1891.
Application filed March 11, 1891. Serial No. 38%,601. (No model.) Patented in France August 2, 1890 No. 207,335.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANcoIs LOUIS AN- TOINE CANARY, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Draguignan, in the Department of Var, in France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Do Muzzles, (for which I have obtained patent in France, No. 207,335, dated August 2, 1890,) of which the following is a description.
The object of the present invention is to allow muzzled dogs to eat, drink, and breathe freely, at the same time preventing them from biting any one. To this end I provide a muzzle with a yielding lower part consisting of frames covering the dogs mouth and lower jaw, a spring being employed to force the said frames upward, following the closing motion of that member.
My invention consists in the combination of a yielding spring-pressed part thus employed with the main upper part of the muzzle, and more particularly in the specific combination of devices hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of a muzzle embodying my invention, the yielding lower part being closed in the former, open in the latter, and the outline of the dogs head being roughly indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 represents a View from below of the muzzle. Fig. 4 represents a rear elevation of the devices embodying my invention, and Fig. 5 represents a front elevation of said devices.
My improved muzzle, as shown in the drawdoes not need any further description, as the upper part of almost any ordinary muzzle will sufltlce. To this upper part, nearly under the nostrils of the dog, a frame I) is pivoted at 0, extending backward and opening downward. A second frame d extends therefrom to guideways, which are attached to the rear lower corners of the upper or main part of the muzzle. These guideways have the form of closed elliptic links, and the frame d is provided with eyes e, which fit thereon, sliding freely. The said frame 01 is connected to the frame 1) on each side by rings f, which allow said frames 1) d to slide easily. These frames are continually forced upward by a plate-spring h, which is curved and bears with its convexity against the frame (1, the
rear end of said spring being fixed to a crossrod g, which rests in the lower ends of links or guideways. When the dog cats or drinks, these freely-moving parts I) (1 yield to the necessary movement of the lower jaw, but at all times the frame 1) covers the mouth sufficiently to prevent him from biting any one. Such an attempt will result only in a slight blow from the frame 5, which can do no great harm. The muzzle does not bind closely anywhere on the dogs head, and there is no impediment to breathing. It is lined with leather, cloth, or other soft material at the points where it is most likely to rub the skin and make it sore.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a dog-muzzle, the combination, with the rigid head-gear, of the movable lower portions d and I), having sliding connection with each other and each being movably attached to said rigid head-gear, the loops or guideways e, and
spring h, bearing against the part (1 to close it when the dog closes his mouth, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of February, 1891.
FRANQOIS' LOUIS ANTOINE CANARY.
