PACKING BOX FORYBUTTON FASTENERS. No. 333,159. Patented Dec. 29, 1885.

Inventor;
I fiD-w M WWW 7 IINTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS H. RICHARDS, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASS, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERI- CAN BUTTON FASTENER COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONN.
PACKING-BOX FOR BUTTON-FASTENERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N6. 333,159, dated December 29, 1885-.
Application filed June 8, 1885. Serial No. lfi7,997. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, county ofHampden, State of Massach usetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fastencr'Packing-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to boxes to be used for packing the button-fasteners (and others similar thereto) which are shown in United States Patent No. 314,684, dated March 31, 1885, the object being to provide a box holding such fasteners in a row, and from which they may be conveniently discharged into the magazine of a button-setting machine.
To this end the invention consists in the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l is a perspective View of a box embodying my improvements having the cover partially slid off. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same box closed. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a box in which the fastenerreceiving channels are differently arranged. Fig. 4 shows a side and an edge view of the buttonfastener for the packing of which this case is more especially designed. Fig. 5 is a View, similar to Fig. 1, of a smaller box embodying a part of my invention. Fig. 6 shows the manner of takinga row of the fasteners out of the box by means ofa suitableinstrument.
Similar characters designate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, A designates a tubular cover of the packing box.
B is a slide or block, so fitting within cover A as to be readily moved therein. In this slide are formed one or more channels, 0, for receiving the button-fasteners F. In the small box, Fig. 5, said channel is T shaped; but when several channels are placed side by side, as in Fig. 3, the elevated edges 2 are required only at the ends of part B. In the larger boxes the channels are placed crosswise of them, (the ends of the channels being covered by a side strip, S,) so that by partially withdrawing the cover, as in Fig. 1, any required number of the rows of fasteners may be uncovered, the other rows remaining securely held.
In order to render the fastener-heads more accessible, and to pack them more closely, I make the fastener-receiving channels 0 inclined, substantially as in Figs. 1, 2, and 6. By this means a great number of fasteners may be securely packed in a small space.
For transferring the fasteners from the box or slide B, I prefer to. use a hand-instrument, N, provided with jaws 3, adapted to grasp the fasteners by the ends of their heads, as shown in Fig. 6.
That the first row of fasteners, 4, Fig. 2, may be accessible to the instrument, I make a groove, 5, in which to place one of the jaws 3.
I do not claim herein the instrument here described, but I have done so in a separate application which I am about to file for a patent on the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- '1. The improved button-fastener packingbox herein described, it comprising a slide or block provided with a fastener receiving groove and acover fitting over said block, substantially as set forth.
2. The improved button-fastener packingbox herein described, it comprising a slide or block provided with a series of channels and a cover adapted to move in a direction crosswise to said channels, substantially as set forth.
3. The improved buttonfast-euer packing box herein'descrihed, it comprising a slide or block provided with a series of channels made inclined, substantially as described, and a sliding cover adapted to hold button-fasteners int-o said channels, substantially as set forth.
4. A button-fastener packing-box of the class described, having the inclined channels 0 and the groove 5,made alongside of the end channel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
FRANCIS H. RICHARDS. lVitnesses:
O. O. PALMER, J OHN J OHNSTON.
