BUTTON-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,969, dated December 22, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES F. THAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ButtonFasteners and I do declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

My present invention relates to button-fastenings; and it consists in certain new and novel improvements in the construction thereof, the same embodying the combination of a stem or post having a forked or duplex attachingloop and a base connected with the stem, the latter being upturned from and at right angles to said base, thereby providing an increased bearing-surface for the fastener when attached to the fabric.

The invention further consists of the base having its opening therein (formed by reason of the upturned post) partially closed by suitable means, thereby forming a practically unbroken edge or periphery around the base, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed.

The object of my improvements is to provide the fastening with a base or table, which in use will not injure or inconvenience the wearer, and at the same time affording a better holding or attaching surface against the under side of the fabric or other article of wear to which buttons are adapted to be attached by means of said improved fastening, the same being an improvement upon the fastening described and claimed in my application for Letters Patent filed in the United States Patent Office June 24., 1885, and numbered 169,610.

The present invention is illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which Figure 1 represents, enlarged, a front view of the fastener and button in position with relation to the fabric, ready for final attachment or bending of the double loop or hook. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing, however, the said loop bent rearwardly and downwardly, as in Serial No. 173,698. (No model.)

Fig. 6 is a detached view of the blank from which the fasteneris formed. Fig. 7 represents, in perspective, both front and rear views of the complete fastener, the same having the base-opening partially closed and ready for attachment. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the fastener, showing the edges of the narrow radial opening before being pinched or swaged together to form the continuous edge or periphery; and Fig. 9 is a similar view showing a modified form of base.

The following is a more detailed description of the improvements, hereinafter claimed, together with the manner of their construction and application.

E, Fig. 6, referring now to the drawings, designates the blank from which the fastener is formed, the same being cut from a piece of sheet metal, and consisting of the base or table portion a and the elongated stem or post I), provided at its outer or free end with the double oppositely-formed hooks 00. The base of the stem extends from the center portion of the table a,an d is separated laterally therefrom by means of the out edges a, all as fully shown in said figure. The stem portion bis bent upwardly, thus forming aright angle with the base, the said hooks or wings a 0 being bent toward each other to form the overhanging forked or duplex attaching-loop, substantially as shown in Fig. 7, &c. Theportions a of the base adjacent to the opening 6, Fig. 8, are pinched, swaged, or otherwise forced together by suitable means, thereby producing a sub stantially smooth edge or periphery around the base, as shown in Fig. 7, said portions a then touching at a, as indicated in the figures.

The operation of attaching a button, H, to the fabric F by means of this improved fastening may be described substantially as follows: The material or fabric is first punctured or perforated, after which the forked loop end 0 c is inserted therein. The eye h of the button is then passed over the points of said loop a 0, (see Figs. 1 and 4,) when finally the end portions 0 are bent rearwardly and down-' wardly by suitable means for the purpose of partially encircling the button-eye, thus securing the parts together and preventing the button from being accidentally detached, the flat base a then bearing against the opposite or under side of the fabric, all as fully shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5.

Having thus described my invention, Wh at I claim, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is V 1. The button fastener hereinbefore described, consisting of the single stem or post I), havingthe retaining-base or table a, formed on one end substantially at right angles with and at the center of the horizontal plane of said base, and the forked attaching-loop c on the other end, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The button-fastener 'A, hereinbefore described, consisting of the base a, having the swaged edge, the stem 11, upturned from said base, and the forked or duplex attaching-loop c, the Whole integrally formed from a sheetmetal blank, substantially as shown and set forth.
