FOLDING BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,956, dated December 22, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, GEORGE L. SLATER and WILLIAM A. EATON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Buchanan,in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figurel of the drawings is a perspective view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of the transverse shaft and its connections, and Fig. 3is a longitudinal sectional view of the device in an open position.

Our invention relates to folding beds; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the base of the folding bed,which may be. of open frame-work in any ornamental design; or it may have closed sides and be provided with a drawer for the reception of articles of bed-clothing or toilet articles. The base A is provided with a vertical back, 13, which is open at B for a portion of its height, to permit the bed-bottom to be turned down into a horizontal position when it is desired to prepare the bed for occupancy.

In the base A we provide a transverse horizontal shaft, 0, which has its bearings in the side rails, D, and is provided on one end with a fixed cog gear-wheel, E, so that the said wheel revolves with the shaft and not upon it. This gear-wheel E engages a nearly semicircularshaped rack, F, which is secured to the inner face ofa base-rail, G, and also to one of the uprights H of the back B. The bed-rails may be handsomely ornamented on their outer faces to give the piece of furniture the desired appearance.

The horizontal shaft 0 is encircled by a coil-spring, K, which is secured at one end to the shaft 0 by a screw, L, and the other end of the spring K is secured to the head M of the bed-frame by a staple or other convenient fastening, N, said spring K assisting in elevating the bed-frame from a horizontal toavertical position, and holding it in the vertical position after it has been elevated thereto.

The bottom of the bed-frame is closed with ornamental wood-work-such as panels a a, molding b, and a mirror, 0.

At the top the ornamental front of the folding bed is provided with the hinged ornamental cornice P, provided at its ends with ornamental down-strips Q, of molding, which, when opened out when the front is let down, form the supporting-legs for the bed-frame, and when the bed-frame is folded up for mor- 7o naments for the front.

In order to give the front a neater appearance when closed, ornamental brackets B may be placed below the down-strips Q. To one or both sides of the vertical back is hinged a jointed bracket-arm, S, which is provided on the outer face of its forward arm, S, with a small shelf or bracket, S On the inner face the arm S is provided with a short lockingarm, T, which, when the folding bed is folded up in imitation of a wardrobe or dressingcase, engages a screw-eye, U, at one or both sides of the mirror, to support the toilet-shelf, and also to prevent the bed-bottom from accidentally assuming the horizontal position. This shelf S may also be used for supporting small articles when the bed bottom is let down, if desired.

A transverse space,V, is formed between the foot-board and the transverse ornamental top 0 strip, \V, above the top of the mirror, and in this space V is a block, V, which is provided with a hinged arm, V, which may be turned out against the inner face of the hinged portion of the foot-board, to hold the support- 5 ing -legs in the extended position when the hinged bed-bottom is let down.
