Description

(No Model.) v
J.H.LANEY.
FILING GASE. No. 332,665. Paterted Dec. 1 5, 1 85.
FIGJ.
I 'U a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. LANEY, OF INDIANA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FILING-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332.665, dated December 15, 1885.
Application filed Aprl 24, 1885.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. LANEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indiana, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing-Cascs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fgure 1 is a plan View of my improved knockdown file case Or envelope. Fig. 2 is an end View of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section in detail. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the case, showing its end sealed. Fig. 5 is a section taken longitndinally through the case, showing a transfer-file filled with letters inclosed therein.
The object of my inventi on is to provide a light portable knock down case or envelope of rectangular form, which has Secured to it a self-adhesive strip grooved onits free ends and back, and adapted to secnrely hold the end fiaps of the case when the latter is set up, as will be fnlly understood froni the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
My improved file-case may be made of thin strips of Wood, of straw-board, or of any other suitable material. When it is set np for receiving a transferfilc, it presents four flat closed sides, one closed and sealed end, and one open end. The two broad sides A A are flexibly united to the two narrow sides A' A', thejoints of which are re-enforced by narrow strips a a (E a, of cloth, pasted on the inner side ofthe case, and shown in Figs. 2 and 3. One end of the case is constrncted with four fiaps, a a a' a', to one, a', of which is cemented a self-scaling strip, B, having two free flaps, I) b, and pro vided on one side with an adhcsive substance. A case thns construeted will lie fiat, as indi Serial N0.163,3-12. (No model.)
cated by Figs. l and 2, and a great nnnber of them can be' packed in a comparatively smal space for cheap transportation.
To set up a case in the form of a rectangular box, (shown by Fig. 4,) the two flapsa a are lapped one over the other, as shown in Fig. 3, and the two flaps a' a are then lapped over the fiaps a a, after which the end of the case is sealed by cementing the strip B in place, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. The case or box is now ready for receiving the transfer-file, as shown in Fig. 5.
The transfer-file consists, essentially, of a tablet, F, four tnbular posts or letter-holders, D', a curved movable gnard, E, an end piece, H, and two angular side pieces, H all of which has been fully set forth in my application for Letters Patent bearing even date with the filing of this.
XVhen the transfer-fileis in place in the case, the headings of the letters, bills, Ste., are next the closed end of the case, and the piece H closcs the opposite end of the case, as shown in Fig. 5.
The filled cases can be placed on a shelf on edge, and the contents of the cases can be brietly indicated on the piece H of the file for ready reference.
Having described my invention, whatI claim as new is- The withindescribed new and improved article of mannfacture, consisting of a knockdown case having four folding end fiaps and a self-scaling or adhesive flexible closing-strip, B, across one of the end fiaps, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I al'iix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JOHN H. LANEY.
