UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM 'I. BRUNDAGE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ARTISTS SKETCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,045, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed May 19, 1885. Serial No. 165,939.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that LWILLiAM 'l. BRUNDAGE, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York. have invented a new and Improved Artists Sketch- Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved artists sketchbox which is so constructed that holding the palette in the same hand with the box is greatly facilitated.
The invention consists in the combination, with an artists box,ofsocket-pieces,on one end and a palette fitting in the box and provided at one end with hook-clips fitting in the sockets and serving to hold the palette on the end of the box.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of relerence indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved artists sketch box opened. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same opened, parts being broken out. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same closed, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of part of the same.
The box A,having the cover B,is divided by partitions G into a series of compartments for receiving the paint tubes, brushes, oil-cans, 850., and is provided in its bottom with an Opening, D, for the thumb in the same manner as a palette. In the cover B the sketchl g-boards E are held. Usually the cover is held erect, the box held by the thumb of the left hand, and with the right hand the artist paints or sketches 011 the sketch-board, E, held in the cover B, the end part of the palette being held between the fingers of the left hand and the under side of the box A. This is very nconvenient and tiring.
(No model.)
In my improved artists sketch-box I provide the palette F, which is of such size that it fits in the box. with two hook-clips. G, at one end, and on the right-hand end of the box A two socket-clips or recessed pieces, H, are secured, which serve to receive the hook-clips G. The palette is thus held on the end of the box and adjacent to the compartments containing the paint-tubes, &c., and the fingers need not hold the palette.
A large palette can be held as easily as a small one, and thus larger palettes can be used with success in sketching-boxes, and with the palettes larger boxes for receiving them are used, and in the la ger boxes larger sketching-boards can be placed.
\Vhen the palette is not in use, it is placed upon the partitions O and the box closed.
I am aware that boxes have been provided with h nged lids of tin adapted to be swung back for use as paint-mixers, and I do not claim such as of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. An artists sketch-box provided on one end or side with devices for detachably holding a palette on the sketch-box, the said palette projecting from the side or end of the sketch-box in aplane parallel with that of the box, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The coinbination, with the artists sketchbox A, having the socket-pieces H on one end, of the palette F, fitting within the box, and provided at one end with hook-clips, which can be passed into the socket-pieces on the end of the box, substantially as herein shown and described.
