UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM. F. SEARGEANT, OF MARSHALL, MISSOURI.
SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,011, dated December 8l 1885.
Application filed July 20, 1885. Serial No. 172,115. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known th at I, WILLIAM F. SEARGEANT, of Marshall, in the county of Saline and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Square, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to that class of devices used by carpenters and other wood-Workers for the purpose of marking out their Work in order to form perfect joints, the object of the present invention being to construct asquare that shall be particularly applicable for use in weather-boarding houses or other structures; and the invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as Will be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective View of my improved form of square.
A represents the blade, and B the stock, of the square, the two parts being secured together in any of the well-known ways. The stock B may be made of metal or of hard wood, but is preferably made of wood and faced with metallic plates, as aa, that are screwed to the wood body of the stock. A wide slot, O, that is at right angles to the blade A, is formed in the stock B, so that the stock actually consists of two parallel parts or legs, d and c. The leg e may be ofthe same length as the leg d; but I prefer to make the legs in about the proportions shown in the drawing. The upper end of theslot O is at right angles to the face of the stock, so that when hung upon a Weatherboard the face of the stock gives aline at right angles to the edge of the weather-board.
The blade A is graduated, as shown, and its projecting end is beveled in order that it may be used to mark off ruiters. For very small measurements I divide one inch on the heel of the blade into thirty-seconds oi' an inch.
My improved form of square is particularly applicable for use in marking Weather-boards, so that accurate joints may be formed at the points where the boards abut against the window-casings and the corner-boards, and in such cases the board is inserted in the slot G, the outer edge of the stock brought in line with the Window-casing or corner-board, and the board to becut is scribed or marked at the exact point where the cut is required. The square may also be used for all of the purposes for which the ordinary forni of square is used.
In order that the square may be hung upon a peg or nail, the blade A is formed with an elongated hole, in which the suspending nail or peg can be inserted.
In order that the square may always be provided with a scribe, I form a socket in the stock B, in which ascribe, h, is inserted.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A square in which the stock is provided with a slot, as C, of which the upper face is at right angles to the face of the stock, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacturer; square formed with a slotted stock and a graduated blade having a ruiter-bevel at its end, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufaotu re, a square formed with a slotted stock and a graduated blade having a miter-bevel at its end and provided with au elongated hole, as i, substantially as described.
WILLIAM F. SEARGEANT.
