NEWSPAPER-FILE.
S?EC'IFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,872, dated December 8, 188.5.
Application filed August 27, 1835. Serial No. 175,486. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER DOM, of Mount Healthy, Hamilton county, Chic, have invented a new and useful Improvement in NewspapenFiles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in those files orholders which enable newspapers and other serial publications to be conveniently grasped by one hand of the reader, while with his other hand he holds or turns over the leaves of the publication.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my file in the closed condition and holding one or more newspapers. Fig. 2 shows the file in its open condition;
Ais a staff or bar, preferably of walnut or other hard wood, one end of which has the form of a handle, B. Lateral protuberances C D on said staff near its respective ends inclose a recess or depression, E, which receives the back portions of the newspapers F or other periodicals to be filed. Each protuberance has a ring or loop, G H, preferably of the represented rectangular form.
Projecting perpendicularly from bottom of recess E are spikes J, capable of occupying orifices 7c in a bar or jaw,K, likewise preferably of hard wood, and whose thickness is such as to 0 combine a moderate degree of elasticity with considerable rigidity. Permanently attached to said jaw K, near its respective extremities, are two platesprings, L M, preferably composed of steel or of springbrass. The outer portion of link or ring G, so as to constitute with said ring a very flexible hinge attachment to the end of thest-aft' A which is most remote I from the handle B. The spring M is waved or curved, as at h, so as to be capable of easy 40 engagement under the ring H and of secure retention thereunder against any accidental displacement. (See Fig. l.) The shape of the springs is such as in coaction with the recessed stafi Aand thejaw K to press the said jaw with substantial uniformity throughout its length upon either a single copy of the inserted periodical or pamphlet or upon two or more such copies. The spikes J are of length sufficient to penetrate any thickness of paper likely to be filed, and to extend beyond the same some distance into the orifices 7c of the jaw K.
As has been stated, the construction issuch as to facilitate the expeditious insertion or removal of any one or more copies at will.
I claim as new and of my invention A file for holding newspapers or other unbound papers or publications, consisting of staff A B, having near its respective ends lateral protuberances C D, and between said protuberances a depression, E, said protuberauces having rings G H, and said depression having spikes J, the samebeing combined with the perforate jaw K 75, having plate-springs L 65 M, of which one, L, is hinged permanently to ring G and the other engages by its waved portion h under ring H, in the manner explained.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto 70 set my hand.
ALEXANDER DOM.
