Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February 7, 1913.
Patented May 19, 1,914?. Serial No. 746,912.
To ClZZ tf1/0m t may concern.'
Be it known that l, Bonn Couorr, a citizen oit the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of lVoodbury and State of Towa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to paper binders and has for an object to provide a binder with improved means ior maintaining the engaging' wires in engaging position.
A further object of the inventio-n is to provide improved means for operating and locking the engaging wires.
A further object o1 the invention is to provide hinge engaging wires with improved means for moving the wires upon their h inges and locking them in engaging position.
lli/lith these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully de` scribed and claimed.
Tn the drawings: Figure 1 is a view of the improved binder shown in perspective and in engagement with a conventional book cover. F ig. 2 is a plan view of the binder with the cover member removed showing' the operating parts. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing one of the wire sections with its hinge and foot member taken on line 3-3 ot' Fig. 2. Fig. et is a detail sectional view showing one` of the operating' cams in side elevation. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on li ne 5-5 of Fig. 2 and showing the lock in section. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of a Vtragment ot' one of the hinge wires and the Ytoot. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view in side elevation oil the locking wire.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved hinder which forms the subject matter of this application includes a base or back 10 preferably constructed of channel. metal and adapted to he secured in the back of a hook shown at 11. Disposed adjacent the ends of the channel 10 are blocks 12 and 13 in one side of which are rigidly mounted 'engaging wires 14- extending upwardly above the channel back 10 and curved as at 15. At the other end of the blocks 12 and 13 foot, blocks 1G and 17 are pivoted in slots in the blocks 12 and 13 as at 18 and 15). The foot blocks 16 and 17 carry engaging wires 2O which are formed at their upper ends with curves 2.1 whose extremities are shaped to properly engage and interlock with the extremities oit the wires 14- in the usual well known manner. Under the foot blocks 16 and 17 springs 22 are employed which serve to yieldingly hold the wires 2O outwardly away from the wires 14e as shown at Fig. 3 and in dotted lines at Figs. 1 and :2.
To move the wires with the wires llin such position a cam is provided hearii in a depression Q-lin the toe 1G of the toot block 1G and a similar cam 25 bearing in a depres` sion 26 in the toe 17 of the foot block 17. The cams Q3 and 25 run through slots 27 in the blocks 12 and 13 so that when the cams are moved longitudinally they serve to force the foot blocks 16 and 17 downwardly around their pivots against the tension of the springs 2O into engagement and lock them 22 and to close the wires 20 into locking engagement with the wires 111, as shown at F 1. o move said cams the saine are formed upon the extremities oi" a wire or rod 28 having a return bend at 29 at one end as indicated at Figs. 1, 2 and 7 which bend is turned upwardly :s indicated at Figs. 1 and '7 to form a hand hold.
The wire 2S is provided with a notch 30 which passes under a keeper 31 carried upon the channel back 10 so that when moved torward to locking position the resiliency of the wire 28 serves to spring such wire upwardly until the keeper 31 is seated in the notch 30 and prevents accidental in'ilocking ot the parts. It will be apparent that simply longitudinal sliding ot the wire 28 carrying the cams Q3 and 25 serves to oseil- .late the wires 20 upon their pivots :troni full line to dotted line position, as shown at Fig. 1 and that when the wire is moved to locking position it is itself locked by the keeper 31 to maintain the extremities ot' the wires 111 and 2O in engagement and to maintain the sheets indica-ted at 32 'properly upon such engaging' wires, A cover member 38 is also provided having openings 3-1 which pass over the wires 1-1 and slots 35 which permit the movements of the wires 2O upon their pivots, such cover being employed simply to close the Channel ineinloer and cover the operating parts.
l elaini:-
l. in a binder, a channel haol, rigid blocks along the saine, and rigid wires rising troni such blocks, coinhined witi foothloclrs pivoted along the bach and having toes extending inward toward the rigid wires, wires rising roni the foot blocks and coacting at their upper ends with the rigid wires, springs throwing the toes norinally upward, and a rod movable longitudinally in the nach and having sains overlying said toes, for the purpose set forth.
In a hinder, a back, oot blocks pivoted upon the hack, rigid engaging wires extending troni the hack adjacent said blocks, wires carried by the foot blocks and extending in normal parallelism with the rigid wires, the ends ot said wires heilig curved to engage each other, eoii springs respectively disposed between the toot hloelrs and bach for normally holding the .wires in spacer, relation, and inanually controlled ineans coperating' with said foot blocks to simultaneously swing the latter against the tension oi' the springs to engage said rires.
3. in a hinder, a hash, rigid wires extending troni the haolr, foot blocks pivoted upon the hack adjacent the rigid wires, wires carried by the toot blocks and extending in norinal parallelism with the rigid wires, the extremities of' said wires being curved to engage eaeh other, a rod extending longitudinally of the hach and in parallelism with the pivots of the Vtoot blocks, and Canis carried by the rod bearing upon and adapted to oscillate the toot blocks and wires oarried thereby.
el. ln a, binder, a haelt, rigid blocks along the saine having transverse slots, and rigir wires rising troni said blocks; combined Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the with foot blocks pivoted to said rigid blocks and having toes with depressions in their upper edges, wires rising roin the foot blocks and coacting with the other wires, springs throwing said toes normally upward, a rod niovahle longitudinally in the hach and having oains siiding in said slots and depressions= and nieans for holding the rod at one eXtreine position.
5. in a hinder, a hack, rigid blocks along the saine having transverse slots, and rigid wires rising troni said blocks; Combined with foot blocks pivoted to said rigid blocks and having toes with depressions in their upper edges, wires rising from the foot hloehs and coasting with the other wires, springs throwing said toes normally upward, a rod movable longitudinally in the hach and having Canis sliding in said slots and depressions, the rod having a handle at one end and a notch adjacent said handle, and a keeper on the back engaging said notch at one extreme position oi the rod.
3. in a hinder, a channel hack, rigid hiocls along the saine, and rigid wires rising troni such hloclzs; combined with foot blocks pivoted to the rigid blocks and having toes extending inward toward thein, .wires rising troni the 'toot blocks and eoaeting at their upper ends with the rigid wires, springs throwing said toes normally upward7 a. rod niovahle longitudinally in the hach and having earns overlying said toes Jior the purpose set forth, the rod having a handle at one end and a notch adjacent said handle, and a keeper on the hack engaging said notch at one extreme position of the rod.
in testimony whereof 'i aiiix niy signature in presence of two witnesses.
