HEINRICH HOROWVITZ, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
CULlNARY GRATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,709, dated December 1, 1885.
Serial No. 164,672.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH Honowrrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Culinary Graters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in graters, such as are used in culinary opera tions for the various purposes to which such devices are adapted; and it consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, in which Figure l is a face view, part in section, of my improved grater. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same in the plane 00 as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the grater, made of sheet metal or other suitable material, and having its longitudinal edges a a rolled up for the reception of the arms I) b of a bentwire frame, B, which arms snugly fit the roll, but are not securely clamped, so that the frame can be easily withdrawn or inserted therein when so desired. To retain the frame in position, the ends of the arms 22 b of the frame are provided with screwthreads, which are engaged by internal threads in nuts or buttons 0, screwed on the said ends of the arms, said nuts or buttons also performing the functions of legs.
In the example shown in the drawings a grater is illustrated which has a convex grating-surface; but the frame can be used just as expeditiously with a flat grater. However, when the frame is applied to such a convex grater I connect the arms I) b of the frame by means of bars D D, preferabl one at or near each end of the grater, which are removably secured to the said arms. One method of securing the same, as shown in the drawings, is to form an eye on each of the ends of the bars, which eyes receive the arms of the frame, and the upper bar is retained in position by resting against the grater and a bend formed in the frame at that point, while the lower bar is held between the grater and the nuts or buttons; but, if desired, the upper bar can be rigidly secured. The bars are intended to strengthen the grater, by resisting any force tending to spread the same, and are therefore of more service when a convex grater is used; but they are also applicable to good purpose in flatgraters. The upper part of the frame is bent to form an ordinary wire handle; but for convenience in handling the grater I attach an ordinary wooden handle, 0, thereto, which is put on during the process of manufacture of the frame.
From the above description it will be readily perceived that the frame can be easily withdrawn from the grater by removing the nuts or buttons 0 and the lower stiffening-bar, and it can be applied to a new grater when the old one is worn out or accidentally destroyed, while at the same time it renders the frame provided with two arms that are passed through said tubular edges, and detachable fastenings, that are also adapted to serve as legs for the grater, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a convex grater, A, having tubular edges, of the crossbars D D, the wire frame comprising two arms extending through the tubular edges and engaging the bars, and screw-nuts or buttons fitting the extremities of the arms, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a grater having tubular edges provided at each end with a cross-bar having eyes in their ends, a wire frame provided with a handle, and comprising two arms extending through the eyes of the bars and the tubular edges of the grater, and screw-nuts or buttons engaging the extremities of the arms, substantially as de scribed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HEINRIOH HOROXVITZ. [L. s]
