WITNESSES; INVEISITQR 2224/ f; A: BY a 1x Emma YMW'M W ATTORNEYS JOHN HAM,
PATENT tries,
OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
STEAM-BOILER FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,636, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed November 13, 1884. Renewed October 10, 1855, Serial No. 179,567. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam- Boiler Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel combination and arrangement of devices for promoting the combustion in steam-boiler furnaces, and this I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a steam-boiler provided with my improved furnace. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same in the plane a: as, Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a horizontal cylindrical boiler provided with fire-tubes a. B is the fire-chamber; O, the grate; I), the ash-pit; E, the bridge-wall, and F the combustion-chamber. G are air-fines, which pass through the boiler, their rear ends extending through the back wall, H, of the furnace into the open air. The front ends of the air-flues are connected by suitable pipes, b, c,and d,and the necessary elbows, d, to the air-distributer I, which is situated in the combustion-chamber F, and extends transversely through the same. This air-distributer I consists of a metal cylinder, which is closed at both ends, and provided with alarge number of perforations, through which perforations the air drawn or forced into the airfiues G passes, well distributed, into the combustion-chamber F, and comes into contact therein with the products of combustion of the fuel on the grate O.
In the drawings I have shown two air-fines G; but only one or any number can be used, the number used'corresponding to the amount of air required for the complete combustion of the furnace-gases.
In order to avoid as much as possible the actual contact of the hot gas with the air-distributer I, I place the same in a free space, K, left between the bridge-wall E and the bottom wall,L,of the combustion-chamber F, the top of the air-distributer being on a line with the top of the respective walls E L. The
external air introduced into the combustionchamber F, whether so introduced by the natural draft of the chimney or by means of a blower, is heated approximately to the temperature of the water in the boiler while passing through the air-fines G, and is still further heated in passing through the pipes Z) c d,which lead to the air-distributer I, and therefore does not cool the gas as much as if the cold air were introduced directly into the combustion-chamber.
It is not necessary to use separate long tubes for the air-fines G, as, for instance, if it should be desired to add my improvement to an ordinary tubular boiler, the pipes b,c,and d, which form the connection with the airfiues G and the air-distributor I, can be directly secured to one, two, or more of the firetubes a of the boiler, said fire-tubes then act ing in the capacity of air-tubes.
The object of my invention is to provide means for the introduction of heated and welldistributed air into the combustion-chambers of steam-boiler furnaces for procuring a better combustion of the furnace-gases, whereby the heating capacity, and consequently the efficiency of the furnace,is increased, and great economy in fuel is effected.
I am aware that an air-heating chamber in the upper part of a fuel-chamber has been connected with one end of an airline passing longitudinally through a boiler; also, that an air-heater at the front of a fuel-chamber has been connected by pipes with an air-distributing box supported in rear of a bridgewall with the upper sides of the wall and the box on a level. Such features therefore I do not broadly claim.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the fire-chamber B, the combustion-chamber F, and the bridgewall E, with the boiler A, the transverse foraminous air-distributor Larranged in rear of the bridge-wall, the air-flue G, passing longitudinally through the boiler, and pipes b, c, and (1, connecting the end of the air-flue which is at the front end of the boiler with the air-distributer, saidpipes being subject to heat from the fire-chamber, to constitute a supplementary heater to the air-flue in the boiler, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the fire-chamber B, necting the end of the air-flue which is at the the combustion-chamber F, and the bridgefront end of the boiler with the air-distribu- Wall E,arranged in relation to the bottom wall, ter, substantially as described.
