STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,620, dated October 27, 1903. Application filed February 10, 1902. Serial No. 93,277. (No model.)
The essential features are a low furnace.
I having a large or double grate to give a large firing-surface. Over one portion of the furnace extends the boiler. Over the opposite portion is arranged a top of brickwork or other suitable material, provided with fiues and in- 2o lets for the introduction of fuel and a regulable supply of air. Centrally over the furnace and grate and within the boiler is arranged the combustion-chamber,havin g a contracted mouth. p My invention will be understood by reference to the drawings herewith, in which the reference-numerals of the specification indicate the same parts in both figures.
Figure I is a vertical longitudinal section of my combined boiler and furnace, showin g the essential features and the arrangement. Fig. 11 is a horizontal cross-section of the front portion of the boiler, intended particularly to show the semicircular form and arran'ge-' ment of the combustion-chamber substantially over the center of the grate and entirely surrounded by the boiler.
In the figures, 1 indicates the foundation, of brickwork or other suitable construction;
2, the ash-pit, provided with front and rear doors 3 3 for convenience in cleaning and for the admission of the air beneath the grate 4, of double or extra size, affording a large grate-surface by which a large amount of coal may be fired and burned and a large amount of gas generated, which is instantly mixed with a regulable amount of air and completely consumed.
6 indicates the low furnace, having the doors 7 and the top 8, in which is formed a chute 9 for the introduction of any suitable fuel and the admission of air through one or more air-inlets 10, closed by slides 11.
, 15 is the combustion-chamber, having a contracted mouth 16 and arranged practically 5 over the center of the furnace and the grate and in the interior of the boiler, so that the combustion of the mixed gases and air therein takes place adjacent to the mouths of the tubes and is instantly communicated to the water.
20 is the outer shell of the boiler; 21, the inner shell, forming the combustion-chamber; 22, the tubes; 23, the braces; 24, the smokefine; 25, the stay-bolts, connecting the outer and inner shells, which are bent and connected, forming the circular leg 26,- resting on the foundation and lined with the fire-brick 27.
By this peculiar construction and arrangement of furnace and boiler a large amount of 7 a gas is generated and thoroughly heated and mixed with a regulable supply of air admitted through the inlets, and the gases unconsumed in the furnace are rapidly drawn through the contracted mouth into the combustion-chamber, where they are entirely eonsumed and a high degree of heat generated in close contact with the water-surface at the mouths of the tubes and in the interior of the boiler. The low furnace is compact and eco- 8o nomioal in construction and confines the air and gas, so that they are well mixed and the air brought in and maintained close to the fire to be at once thoroughly heated and avoid the danger of the admission of cold air 8 5 to chill the gas or the interior of the furnace. The low furnace alone would give an imperfeet combustion; but by the combination therewith of the boiler inclosing the combustion-chamber the unconsumed and heated o gases mixed with the heated air are drawn from the furnace up through the contracted mouth, thereby thoroughly mixed and completely consumed in the combustion-chamber, as described.
This generator is suitable for any fuel, but particularly useful for refuse fuels and lowgrade coals, from which by the large grate a large amount of gas is generatedto be completely consumed, thus obtaining from lowroo grade coal practically perfect combustion and a high degree of heat.
In construction my generator is compact and economical. I avoid the fire-door in the boiler-shell and also, by the short water-leg, the deterioration of plates resulting from sediment and defective circulation in a long water-leg.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is
1. I11 a steam-generator, the combination with a low brick furnace, having a brick top at its front, of a double grate arranged therein, and a boiler supported on the brick by a short water-leg, having a vertical portion and horizontal tubes extending into the vertical portion over the rear of the furnace and having an internal combustion-chamber in the vertical portion arranged substantially over the center of the grate and low furnace.
2. In a steam-generator, the combination with a suitable setting, of a grate having an enlarged surface supported 011 said setting, of the boiler extending over the rear of the grate and furnace, a suitable top extending over the front of the grate, an outer shell to the boiler and a vertical inner shell arranged in the outer shell and forming a vertical combustion-chamber with a contracted mouth arranged substantially over the center of the grate and furnace.
3. In a steam-generator, the combination with a suitable setting forming an ash-pit, of a grate having a large heating-surface arranged on the setting over the ashpit, an outer boiler-shell, tubes arranged therein extending over-the rear of the grate and furnace, a top arranged adjacent to and extending over the front of the grate, whereby a low furnace is formed above the grate, an inner shell arranged within the outer shell and in front of the tubes, forming a vertical combustion-chamber extending upwardly substantially over the center of the grate and furnace.
4. In a steam-generator, the combination with a suitable brick setting forming an ashpit, of front and rear doors therein, a double grate affording a large heating-surface arextending forwardly ranged on the setting above the ash-pit, a top extendinginwardly over the front of the grate and forming a low furnace, side and rear walls of refractory material, said top and side walls being formed with a chute and flues for the introduction of coal and the admission of air,
slides at the outer ends of said chute and fines,
of an outer boiler-shell supported on the setting, horizontal flues arranged in said shell over the rear of the furnace, of an inner shell arranged within the front of the outer shell and having its lower edge bent and connected to the lower edge of the outer shell to form a short, circular leg, resting on the brickwork of the setting, a fire-brick lining within said circular leg, said inner shell forming a vcrtical combustionchamber, having a contracted lower mouth and arranged over the center of the grate and adjacent to the forward ends of the tubes.
5. In a steam-generator, the combination with a suitable brick setting, of a double-size grate alfording a large heating-surface arranged on the setting above the ashpit, a brick top having fines for the admission of the air extending inwardly over the front of the grate, suitable doors in said brick setting; of an outer boiler-shell supported on the setting, horizontal tubes arranged in said shell, of an inner shell arranged within the front portion of the outer shell and having its lower margin outwardly flanged and connected to the lower margin of the outer shell also outwardly flanged, forming a short waterleg resting on the brick setting with the rivets out of contact with the fire, and a firebrick lining within said circular leg, said inner shell formingavertical combustion-chainher having a contracted lower mouth and arranged over the center of the grate and adjacent to the forward ends of the tubes.
