NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COURTENAY KINGSFORD, on LONDON, ENGLAND.
STEAM GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,690, dated December 5, 1882.
Application filed October 527, 1882. (No model.) Patented in England March 6, 1882, No.1,078.
To all whom it may concern V i Beitknown that I, GOURTENAY KINGSFORD,
ofLondon, England, manufacturing chemist,
have invented new and useful improvements in and relating to steam-generators,chiefly designed for utilizing the waste heat of cokeovens or the like, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 1,078, bearing date 6th March, 1882,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tothat class of steam generators or boilers in which an open flue passes longitudinally through the boiler, and a series of tubes or flues arranged to connect the longitudinal flue with the boiler-shell, so as to form a series of lateral passages, and thereby admit of the entrance of products of combustion into the main longitudinal flue, whether the boiler is fired from underneath or the fires made at each end of the longitudinal flue.
The object of my invention is to provide efficient and convenient apparatus for utilizing the waste heat arising from the combustion of fuel (in coke-ovens and other furnaces) for the generation of steam for motive power or other purposes; and the said invention is designed to afford the .means whereby manufacturers as hereinafter described, and combining the same with a coke oven or ovens (or other furnace or furnaces) insuch a manner that theheat, instead of escaping directly from the latter, will first pass through and about the said apparatus.
My generator is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my improved steam-generator.
plan of the same, and Fig. 3 an end elevation thereof; and Fig. 4 represents a partial'verti- Fig. 2 represents a cal longitudinal section of one of the waterchambers.
Like letters indicate the same parts throughout the drawings.
In carrying my said invention into practice in connection with a coke oven or ovens I propose constructing the steam generator or boiler with three cylindrical chambers or compartments, at, of any required length and diameter, each provided with a flue-tube, 12, extending longitudinally through the same, as represented in Fig. 1. These cylindrical vessels or compartments a form the water chambers or spaces of the generator, and are connected by the pipes '0 with another cylindrical vessehwhich forms the steam-chamber d, and which is arranged above and parallel to the said waterchambers. In two of the chambers to, I connect the longitudinalflue-tube b with the expieces or tubes to form 'flues or apertures e for the purpose hereinafter specified. 'The entire they pass through one or more fines made in the.
brick-work or setting, and then-escape through a chimney in the ordinary manner. Each aperture e is surrounded with a flanged piece or tube, f, riveted to the flue-tube and to the outer shell of the cylindrical chamber. These apertures may be arranged at the bottom or at thesides, or at both the bottom and sides, of
one or more of the said water-chambers, as desired. .Instead of a series of these apertures or flues e, I may form one long aperture in each of the said flue-tubes. The steam-generator above described is constructed entirely of boiler-plates.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A steam-generator consisting of the boilers the longitudinal flucs to and through the boilershell, substantially as described.
