UNITED STATES PATENT Erica,
' TBLESPHOBE DESJARDINS, OF BURLINGTON, VERMONT.
RElN-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,479, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed August .21, 1885. Serial No. 175,005.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TELESPHORE DESJAR- DINS, a'citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Ohittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ReinSupports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My improvement relates to rein -holders; and it consists of a metallic support in two parts, forming a kind of doublehook, in combination with a flexible pad or its equivalent device, whereby the two parts are held together, more particularly as hereinafter de scribed.
The particular object of my invention is its application to the neck band or strap of what is known as a breast-collar, to each side of the same near the top, as a support on each side for the reins, in front of the terrets on the saddle-pad for the purpose of preventing the reins from falling under the ends of the shafts or tongue. It may also be used, by aproper construction of the saddle-pad, in place of the terrets themselves.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of a neck-strap with my form of reinsupport applied on each side near the top, and Fig. 2 a perspective View of a pad bent so as to show clearly the two parts of the device and its manner of operation.
In the drawings, A is a pad made of suita' ble material, and pliable and flexible, and having secured thereto by means of burr-rivets or other fastening two separate hooks, B and B, B having the shorter base, and B the longer one, which together form a rein-support, D. The parts B and B meet at the base at the pointc, and to produce a close fit when (No model.)
pressed together are suitably beveled. The
opposite ends of the support are also designed to meet and be held together ate, the point where the rein is inserted, so that at that point the parts are also properly beveled, as shown, to make a smooth close connection.
Pads A, with the supports D secured there to, as above described, are attached to the neck-strap F,near the top thereof, and one on each side. The reins are inserted within the support at the point e, the parts yielding and separating for that purpose.
It is believed that the stiffness of the neckstrap will always exert a sufficient pressure against the flexible pad A to keep the parts of the support together and closed and hold the rein securely in place; but if at any time such pressure is insufflcient a spring may be applied to the under side of the pad at one end to aid in keeping the supporter closed.
By the use of my invention in some cases terrets can be dispensed with, or my supporters may be used in place of terrets, if flexible pads be employed in connection therewith.
Having thus described my invention,what
I claim is- 1. A reinsupport consisting of two parts forming a closed loop when in place, the base endsof which overlap, and thereby adapted to engage each other and be held together, in combination with asuitable flexible support, substantially as described.
2. A rein-support consisting of the two sectional loops B and B, both loops having their upper and base ends beveled and overlapping to form close joints, in combination with afleXible pad, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
