Description

(No Model.)
C. L. POND.
METALLIC SEAL.
No. 331,439. Patented Deo. 1., 1885..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. POND, OF BUFFALO, NEV YORK.
METALLHC SEAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,439, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed August 1B, 1885.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, OHARLEs L. POND, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Seals, of which the following is a specication.
rlhis invention relates to an improvement in that class of metallic seals which are composed of a disk of soft metal and a shacklewire which passes through openings in the seal-disk.
rI`he object of this invention is to render-the seal more secure and convenient in use; and the invention consists of the improvements which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a face elevation of my improved seal. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same before it is pressed. Fig. 3 is a similar view after it is pressed. Fig. el is a sectional view parallel withl the face of the seal-disk. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a slightly modied construction of the seal-disk. Fig. Gis a ver tical section ofthe same seal before it is pressed. Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the seal after it is pressed. Fig. 8 is a perspective view showing the wire-orifice of the seal-disk reenforced.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the seal-disk, constructed of soft metal, andb represents the shackle-wire, which may be attached to the seal-disk by casting the latter on one end of the wire, or which may be detached from the seal-disk and beinserted with both ends in orifices formed in the same.
c is a recess or depression formedin one side of the seal-disk, and d is araised portion or enlargement formed on the opposite side of the seal-disk in line with the depression c. The threading crilice or orifices e pass through that portion of the seal-disk which lies between the depression c and enlargement d, as clearly represented in Figs. 2 and 6. The depression c and enlargement d may extend across the seal-disk at right angles to the threading-hole, as represented in Figs. 1 and 8, or they may Serial No. 174,734. (No model.)
be arranged centrally on the seal-disk, as rep-. resented in Figs. 5 and 6.
Upon inserting the end of the shackle-wire Z into the threading-orifice e, and pressing the seal in the press, the dies of the press exert their pressure iirst upon the enlargement d and the flat portions on both sides of the recess c, whereby the metal of the disk which lies between the bottom of the recess c and the surface of the enlargement d is displaced with reference to the other portions of the disk, carrying the embedded portions of the Wire with it until the disk is flattened out, as represented in Figs. 3 and 7. By this displacement of a portion of the seal-disk the portions of the wire embedded in the same are bent, corrugated, or crimped, whereby the wire is rmly secured in the disk and prevented from being withdrawn therefrom without defacing the impression or otherwise showing that the seal has been tampered with. lt is obvious that a number of such depressions and enlargements may be arranged along the threading orifice or orifices, if desired. When the seal is very thin, the wire orifices are preferably re-enforced within the recess by semi-tubular enlargementsf, as represented in Fig. 8.
I claim as my invention- 1. A soft-metal seal-disk provided on opposite sides with a depression and an enlargement, and having a wire-orifice formed in the seal-disk between said depression and enlargement, whereby the wire inserted in said orifice is bent or corrugated upon pressing the sealdisk, substantially as set forth.
2. A soft-metal seal-disk provided on opposite sides with a depressionand enlargement extending across the seal-disk, and orifices for the shackle-wire formed through the sealdisk between said depression and enlargement and about at right angles to the same, substantially as set forth.
Vitness my hand this 15th day of August, 1885.
CHARLES L. POND.
