Description

L. LE BRUN March 28, 1967 CORRUGATED SHEET WITH MEANS ACCOMMCDATING DIMENSION VARIATION Filed March 4, 1965 United States Patent 3,310,925 CORRUGATED SHEET WITH MEANS ACCOMMO- DATING DIMENSION VARIATION Leon Le Brun, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, assignor to Montreal Roofing Mfg. Co. Ltd., Montreal, Quebec, Canada Filed Mar. 4, 1965, Ser. No. 437,080 Claims priority, application Canada, Sept. 12, 1964, 911,568, Patent 709,124 1 Claim. (Cl. 52573) The present invention relates to improvements in roofing or siding sheets.
It is a main object of the invention to provide a roofing or siding sheet having a particular configuration capable of providing exceptional features not found in known roofing or siding sheets of this type. More particularly, the roofing or siding sheets of the invention are so designed as to provide complete water-tightness at the joints thereof while having a durable, solid and economical feature.
The above noted objects and features can be found in a roofing or siding sheet made according to the invention and comprising a body of sheet metal formed with a pair of sidelapping ribs extending along two parallel side edges of the body; a plurality of further ribs between said pair of ribs, spaced therefrom and from one another, a plurality of expansion and contraction crimps formed between said pair of ribs and the further ribs and between the further ribs, and cross-ribs between the pairs of sidelapping ribs and the further ribs and also between the further ribs; the cross-ribs being formed at one end of said body.
A better understanding of the invention will be afforded by the following description having reference to the appended drawing, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a shortened perspective view of a roofing or siding sheet made according to the invention;
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of two interconnected sheets made according to the invention;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view intended to illustrate the joining of several adjacent sheets, all made in accordance with the teaching of the invention.
In order to obtain the notable above-mentioned features of tightness, durability and sturdiness, the roofing or siding sheet, which is generally flat and rectangular, is formed of sheet metal with a pair of sidelapping ribs 1 extending along two parallel side edges of the body of the sheet and adapted, as its name implies, to be overlapped with sidelapping ribs of an adjacent sheet as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3.
Between said pair of ribs, a plurality of secondary ribs 3 are provided which are spaced from one another and also spaced from the sidelapping ribs.
3,310,925 Patented Mar. 28, 1967 Ice Between the sidelapping ribs 1 and secondary ribs 3 as well as between the secondary ribs 3, there is provided a plurality of expansion and contraction crimps 5, best identified in FIG. 3.
Finally, cross-ribs 7 are formed between the sidelapping ribs 1 and the secondary ribs 3 as well as between the central secondary ribs; the said cross-ribs 7 being formed at one end of the body of the sheet.
Preferably and in order to obtain full advantages of the above-named feature, the sidelapping and intermediate secondary ribs 1 and 3 are arcuate in cross-section, the crimps 5 are trapezoidal in transverse cross-section while the cross-ribs 7 are triangular in transverse cross-section also. It will be noted that all of these ribs and crimps project from a single side of the body of the sheet.
It has been found in practice that a sheet formed with the above noted constructional features possesses outstanding qualities of water tightness, durability and sturdiness.
I claim:
A roofing or siding sheet comprising a body of sheet metal formed with a pair of arcuate sidelapping ribs extending fully alongeach of two parallel side edges of said body; two spaced intermediate arcuate ribs between said pairs of ribs, extending the full length of said body; a plurality of contiguous trapezoidal extension and contraction crimps extending the full length of said body parallel to and between, on the one hand, said sidelapping ribs and said intermediate ribs and, on the other hand, between said intermediate ribs, and stiifening cross ribs formed between said sidelapping and intermediate ribs and between said intermediate ribs, said stiffening cross ribs intersecting and extending over said crimps, the said cross ribs being triangular in cross-section and projecting on the same side of the sheet as the sidelapping and the intermediate ribs.
