Abstract

1,148,540. Sheathing pipes; pipe joints. SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd. 23 Dec., 1966 [24 Dec., 1965; 27 May, 1966], No. 57751/66. Headings F2G and F2P. Insulating shells 6 about a pipe 7 are sheathed in a longitudinally split tubular sheathing element 1 which is transversely, e.g. annularly, corrugated and has at least one uncorrugated plain cuff or end portion 4, which is slidably received in the corrugated end of an adjacent similar sheathing element, which arrangement permits relative movement between the two elements due to thermal expansion or contraction. The element may be formed from a sheet of metal or other material rolled or bent to rounded or polygonal tubular form with overlapping longitudinal edges. The sheathing elements are retained about the insulated pipe by a strap 8 having a buckle fastening 9, the strap having a corrugated profile corresponding to that of the sheathing elements. Alternatively, the sheathing elements may be retained in place by providing rows of co-operating tongues 16 and slots 17 on the overlapping longitudinal edges of each element. The crosssectional shape of the corrugations may take various forms as illustrated in Fig. 4 (not shown). Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) depict sheathing elements of square cross-section, the corrugations being flattened at the corners. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a sheathing element (1) is strapped to a two part casing around a pipe bend.
