T0 all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BEDELL, of Herkimer, in the county of Herkimer, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in MattressBacks, of which the following, taken in connectionl with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists in a novel construction of a rack designed for storing mattresses in a convenient and neat manner without subjecting them to undue weight, and also without necessitating the lifting of the entire upper part of the tier of mattresses for removing one of the mattresses from the bottom of the tier.

The novelty of the construction of said rack also consists in its capability of being readily taken apart and folded in a compact bundlefor convenience of transportation or storage, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.

In the annexed drawings, Figures I, II, and III are respectively side, end, and top plan viewsof my improved mattress-rack. Fig. IV is a transverse section on linexx, Fig. I. Fig. V is an isometric view of the oomponent parts of the rack bundled for transportation or storage; and Fig. VI is a detached sectional view of the rail which supports the slats.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A A A represent the posts of the rack, arranged in two sets, of three each, and placed aproper distance apart to receive the mattresses horizontally between the said two sets of posts, as represented by broken lines in Fig. I of the drawings. These posts I provide with perforations or mortises a o, which extend through the posts at right angles to each other.

The three posts of each set are detachably tied together by horizontal rails B B, extending through the mortises a a c. Said rails are provided with transverse holes b b, and the posts are provided with coinciding holes b b', and in said holes are inserted removable pins or bolts. The two sets of posts are detachably tied to each other by horizontal cross-bars or end rails, B Bi, which have on their ends tenons which enter the mortises a a', and are retained therein by pins or bolts passing through the posts and tenons of the Serial No. 178,828. (No model.)

posts are provided with a series of the holes et a', distributed over the lengths of thc posts, so as to admit of placing theend rails, B B, at different elevations and different distances apart, according to the thicknesses of the mattresses to be stored in the rack. Braces D D are applied to the sides and to one of the ends of the rack to stiffen thesame. Said rack is readily taken apart by removing the braces, withdrawing the pins or bolts which retain thevrails B B on the posts, then removing the slats and withdrawing the rails from the posts, and when this is accomplished the component parts can be piled compactly and tied in a bundle, as illustrated in Fig. V of the drawings, thus rendering it convenient for transportation or storage.

1. A knockdown rack for mattresses, consisting of the posts A A, having mortises a a', extending at right angles to each other through the posts, rails B B and B B', removably inserted in the aforesaid mortises, holes Z1 b, extending through the rails, coinciding holes, b b', extending through the posts, pins or bolts removably inserted in the holes b b', and slats s s, removably supported on the rails, substantially as set forth and shown.

2. The improved mattress-rack consisting of the posts A A, side rails, B B, tied to the end posts, end rails, B B, provided with the longitudinal grooves c, and the slatss s, seated at their ends inthe said grooves and arched at their central portion, substantially in the manner specied and shown.
