TAIL PIECE FOR VIOLINS. No. 330,185. Patented Nov. 10, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE J. ALBERT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TAIL-PIECE FOR VIOLINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,185, dated November 10, 1885.
Application filed January 31, 1885. Serial No. 154,519. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE J. ALBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Tail-Pieces for Violins, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a tail-piece embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a view of the inner side thereof. Fig. 4 represents an end view, partly sectional, in line at 00, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists in constructing a tail-piece of a violin or similar musical instrument by means substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and described, so that the said tail-piece may be adjusted either vertically or horizontally or in both directions relatively to said instrument.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a tail-piece, and B the loop part thereof, both made of one piece of material known as celluloid or hard rubber, but other compositions of matter may be employed. By this construction the tail-piece and loop are connected in a strong and durable manner, avoiding the use of a separate loop of wire, catgut, 8m, and the parts may be readily molded in various shapes and dimensions. The loop has a circular opening, a, within which is fitted arotary washer, O, the opening I) whereof is angularn D represents a pin which projects eccentrically from its button or head 0 and enters an opening, d, in the back block of the violin, the same being adapted for attaching the tailpiece to the violin, said pin having the portion 6 near the head 0, of angular form and fitted in the angular opening b of the washer C.
It will be seen that two adjustments are provided for the loop B, and consequently the tail-piece, one being by means of the eccentric pin D, which, when placed in different positionsin the square opening of the washer, raises or lowers the loop relatively to the height of the body of the violin or other instrument, being a vertical adjustment, while the other adjustment is a lateral one, and is affected by turning the rotary washer 0, thereby carrying the loops sidewise, as desired. By these two adjustments the tail-piece may be set true in position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tailpiece for a violin or other similar musical instrument, having means, substantially as described, securing said tail-piece to the violin, said means being so arranged and combined as to permit both a lateral and vertical motion of said tail-piece, as stated.
2. A tail-piece for a violin or other similar musical instrument, provided with a circular opening, in combination with a rotary washer fitted in said opening, and a pin adapted to operate said washer, substantially as described.
3. A tail-piece for a violin or other similar musical instrument, provided with a circular opening, in combination with a rotary washer having an angular opening fitted in said circular opening, pin D, having a head, 0, and a portion, 6, of angular form, the said pin projecting eccentrically from said head, and the said angular portion 0 fitting in said angular opening of the washer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
