To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD O. STEVEN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at-Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Chin-Rest for Violins, of which the following is a specification.

The device forming the subject matter of this application is a combined tail piece and chin rest for a violin, and the invention aims not only to combine the tail piece with the chin rest but, as well, so to construct these elements that the vibrations of the belly of the instrument will be interfered with to a minimum extent.

With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made with in the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows in fragmental top plan, a portion of a violin to which one form of chin rest forming the subject matter of this application has been applied; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the chin rest; Fig. 4 is an end elevation showing'a portion of a violin to which the combined chin rest and tail piece has been attached.

In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a violin or viola, embodying a belly 2, a back 3, and an end 4 carrying a peg 5, all as common and well under stood in the art.

In carrying out the present invention there is provided a transversely concaved tail piece 6 having the usual key-hole slots 15 adapted to receive strings 18, the tail piece 6 merging into a laterally extended chin rest 7. Upon the upper face of the tail piece 6, at the point where the tail piece 6 joins into the chin rest 7, upstanding, reinforcing spaced lugs or projections 19 may be formed.

In the upper face of the chin rest 7 there is fashioned a concaved recess 8 defining a Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the marginal rib 9. On the under surface of the structure, to the rear of the point where the tail piece 6 joins the chin rest 7 there is formed a solid shoulder 10, the lower face of which is approximately flush with the lower edge of the concaved tail piece. The rear face of the shoulder 10 is upwardly inclined, and merges into the rear or under face of the chin rest 7, the inclined, terminal face of the shoulder 10 being designated by the reference character 11. Extended longitudinally through the shoulder 10 are openings 12 adapted to receive a loop 14 which engages the peg 5. Projecting downwardly from the chin rest 7 is a leg 16 and projecting downwardly from a lateral extension 20 of the chin rest is an outwardly curved leg 17.

In practical operation, the legs 16 and 17 rest on the belly 2 of the instrument near to the rear end thereof, as clearly shown in the drawings, the lower face of the shoulder 10 being spaced apart from the belly. Consequently, the combined tail piece and chin rest has a bearing upon the belly of the instrument at two points only, the vibrations of the belly being interfered with to a minimum extent, owing to the construction above described.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a device of the class described, a tail piece provided with a laterally projecting chin rest, there being a depending shoulder at the point where the tail piece joins the chin rest, the shoulder having an opening therethrough and disposed longitudinally of the tail piece, the tail piece being concaved on its under surface in front of the shoulder to give access to the opening, the chin rest having a depending leg adjacent its free end, and the chin rest having a short lateral extension provided with a depending leg, the legs projecting below the shoulder.
