Description
E. R. STEWART I 3,301,453
SHOPPING BAG COVER AND CARRIER Jan. 31, 1967 Filed Jan. 5, 1966 INVENTOR 6 4 5 12. SZZ'WZEZ United States Patent 3,301,453 SHOPPING BAG COVER AND CARRIER Edgar R. Stewart, 703 E. 18th St., Paterson, NJ. 07504 Filed Jan. 3, 1966, Ser. No. 518,374 Claims. (Cl. 224--49) My invention is directed toward a combined cover and carrier for shopping bags.
It is an object of my invention to provide a new and improved combined cover and carrier of the character indicated that conceals the contents of a bag being carried from view; protects the bag from becoming wet in rainy weather or while resting on a wet surface; and should the bag break, prevents the bag contents from being spilled on the ground or on the user.
Another object is to provide a new and improved combined cover and carrier which can be manufactured easily and inexpensively.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of my invention will now be explained with reference both to this specification and to the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of my invention;
FIGURE 2 is a view through 2-2 of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 3 is a view through 3-3 of FIGURE-1.
Referring now to FIGURES 1-3, there is shown a bottom hollow rectangular plastic, cardboard or metal box open at the top and having two oppositely disposed vertical elongated side walls 12 and 14, each wall containing at its bottom edge a pair of vertically aligned horizontally separated holes 16, each hole in one wall being aligned with a corresponding hole in the other wall.
First and second horizontal parallel rods or members 18 and 20 extend through corresponding pairs of aligned holes.
I further provide first and second parallel inverted U- shaped members 22 and 24, each member having a pair of downwardly extending legs 26 and 28. The bottom ends of legs 26 of both members 22 are secured to opposite corresponding ends of member 18; the bottom ends of legs 28 of both members 22 are respectively secured to opposite ends of member 20. Legs 26 and 28 extend downward and away from each other.
In use, a shopping bag 30 can have its bottom 31 resting in box 10 and its side walls 33 resting inside against members 22 and 24. A second like box 30 inverted and having longitudinal slots 34 in the horizontal flat surface 36 thereof, is placed over the top of the bag as a cover, with the top end of each of members 22 and 24 extending through the corresponding slot 34. Each slot is covered by a foldable and unfoldable tab 38.
The exposed top ends of members 22 and 24 then serve as carrying handles.
While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, my protection is to be limited only by the terms of the claims which follow.
I claim:
1. A combined cover and carrier for shopping bags comprising a hollow rectangular box open at the top and having first and second parallel oppositely disposed vertical side walls horizontally elongated, each wall having adjacent its bottom edge first and second vertically aligned horizontally separated holes, the first holes in both walls being aligned, the second holes in both walls being aligned, first and second horizontal parallel rods, the first rod extending through the first aligned holes with opposite ends extending outward therefrom, the second rod extending through the second aligned holes with opposite ends extending outward therefrom, a first inverted U shaped member having first and second downwardly extending legs extending past the outside of the first wall, the bottom ends of these first and second legs being respectively securedto corresponding ends of the first and second rods, and a second inverted U shaped member having first and second downwardly extending legs extending past the outside of the second wall, the bottom ends of these first and second legs being respectively secured to the opposite corresponding ends of the first and second rods.
2. A combined cover and carrier as set forth in claim 1, wherein the bottom of the bag rests in said box and the sides of the bag extend upward inside and along side of the first and second members.
3. A combined cover and carrier as set forth in claim 2, further including another like box resting inverted on top of the bag and having first and second parallel oppositely disposed slots accommodating the top ends of the first and second members, respectively.
4. A combined cover and carrier as set forth in claim 3, further including foldable and unfoldable flaps associated with said slots.
5. A combined cover and carrier as set forth in claim 4, wherein the first and second legs of each member extend downward and away from each other.
