This invention relates generally to the field of synthetic resinous handle bags, and more particularly to an improved form thereof incorporating garment hanging means positionable within the mouth of said handle bag, and retained thereby by engagement with portions of the rim of said mouth, and selective interconnection of oppositely disposed handle members disposed on either side of said mouth.

The packaging of Vendible merchandise in synthetic resinous handle bags of a type consisting of a pair of side walls sealed upon opposed side and bottom edges, and interconnected at a continuous -upper edge to an interconnectable handle element is now well known in the art.

The present invention contemplates the incorporation of a detachable hanger structure for supporting garments within the bag, both during the time `of original sale, and by means of an integral hook which projects outwardly of the bag, the bag may be used as a protective device when the garment is hung, for example, within a closet.

It is among the principal objects of the present invention to provide a protection hanging unit of the class described upon which a garment may be hung and subsequently covered at the time of completion of manufac ture, in which condition it may be sold, the packaging being subsequently used to protect the garment after each wearing.

Another object of the invention lies in the provision of improved structure posessed of the above characteristics, in which the cost of fabrication may be of a relatively low order, thereby permitting consequent wide sale, distribution and use.

A further object of the invention lies in the provision of a protective hanging unit for garments, possessed of the above advantages, which may be conveniently manually carried, as well as hung upon a closet -pole or similar supporting structure, without alteration.

A further object of the invention lies in the provision of an improved protective hanging unit which may be conveniently manufactured using equipment already existing in the art.

Still another object of the invention lies in the provision of an improved protective hanging unit which may present an attractive appearance, and in which the elements thereof may lend themselves to separate uses.

A feature of the invention lies in the fact that the `assembled device, when in closed condition is substantially dust proof.

These objects and features, as well as other incidental ends and advantages, will more fully appear in the progress of the following disclosure.

In the drawing, to which reference will be made in the specification, similar reference characters have been employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

In accordance with the invention, the device, generally indicated by reference character 10, comprises broadly: a handle bag element 11 and a hanger element 12.

Ihe handle bag element 11 may be of a well known type, as for example that illustrated in the United States Patent No. 3,132,742, granted May l2, 1964, to Leon K. Laguerre. Bag elements of this type include a Ibag member 14 and a one-piece handle closure 15 sealed within the mouth of the member 14.

The bag member 14 includes first and second side wall members 16 and 17, respectively, sealed at the side edges 18 and 19 and the lower edge 20, and leaving free upper edges 21 and 22 which are interconnected at the inner surfaces thereof above the continuous lower edge 24 of strip portions 24 of the handle enclosure 15. The sealing is accomplished over a substantial area 25, so that considerable mechanical strength is obtained.

The inner surface of the strip 26 is provided with corresponding recesses 27 and projections 28, which when interconnected cause the handle portions 29 and 30 to lie in mutually congruent relation.

As best seen in FIGURES 4 and 5, the interconnection of the means 27 and 28 causes the formation of three interstices 31, 32 and 33, where by a portion of the hanger element 12 may project through each of said interstices, as best seen in FIGURES l .and 6.

The hanger element 12 is preferably formed from suitable synthetic resinous material, and is of generally planar configuration. It is bounded by first and second side surfaces 35 and 36, respectively, and upper edge 37 and a lower edge 38. A pair of end hooked members 39 and 40 extend upwardly from said upper edge 37, and form vertically disposed recesses at 41 and 42, to permit engagement with fold portions 43 and 44, respectively of the strip portion 24. Extending downwardly from the lower edge 38 are first and second sets of hooks 45 and 46, respectively, any of which are selectively engageable with the straps 47 and 48 of an enclosed garment 49 (see FIGURE l). A large vertically extending hook 50 is generally centrally located, and extends through the interstice 32 to permit the assembled device to be suspended from a clothes rod 51 or similar supporting means.

When it is desired to obtain access to the garment, it is necessary only to separate the recesses and projections 27-28, by a mutually opposed pull upon the handle portions 29 and 30, following which the bag element 11 may be slipped from engagement with the hanger element 12. When the wearing of the garment has been completed, it may be again hung on the hooks 45-46, and the bag member 14 again positioned to the location shown in FIGURES 1 and 6, following which interconnection of the recesses and projections 27-28 will serve to retain the bag element 11 upon the hanger element 12. Since the bag element 11 is possessed of separate utility, it may also be used as a receptacle, during such time as it is not used as a protective element.

We Wish it to be understood that we do not consider the invention limited to the precise details of structure shown and set forth in this specification, for obvious modifications will occur to those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains.

We claim:

1. In a protective unit for garments and similar articles, the improvement comprising: a bag element and a hanger element; said bag element including a pair of parallel walls interconnected at the side and lower edges thereof, and having a continuous upper edge dening an opening, a continuous stiffening strip including a pair of interconnected parallel opposed portions within said opening and secured to the bag in the area adjacent to said upper edge of said walls, said strip having upwardly extending free edges, and means including corresponding recesses and projections selectively interconnecting opposed parallel portions to effect a partial closure of said opening, and leaving at least one interstice therebetween; said hanger element including an elongated relatively rigid strip of material having means at either end thereof selectively engaging ysaid upper edge of said stiffening strip at the interconnections of said opposed parallel portions thereof, in such manner that said rigid strip is thereby disposed within said -opening and below said interconnecting means to be retained thereby.

2. Structure in accordance with claim 1, said hanger element including hook means extending upwardly therefrom to project into said interstice to lie outwardly of said bag element, and substantially in the plane thereof.

3. Structure in accordance with claim 1, said stiiening strip having handle members thereon disposed in mutually congruent relation.

4. Structure in accordance with claim 2, said hook means extending between said handle members.
