Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I. do hereby declare that the following is a full,

clean-and exact description thereof,reference,

being had to the accompanying drawings, and

to the letters of reference marked thereon,f

which form a part of this, specification.

The invention also embraces, in combination with ahinged lid, covering-sheet, and openingstring, a ledge or support: formed fillin'g-orifice'forsustaining the lid flush with the box-wall in pastingon the covering-sheet, and it embraces also anlimproved means of ledge or support, as will hereinafter appear.

the string is double, a single piece of string being used, which is attached at its middle to the box, and the free ends of which are brought together through the joint between the box and cover when the latter is closed. "When this construction is used,the ends of the string will usually be laid over the marginal part of the box-wall at a point opposite the hinge of the flap, and the paper sheet 0 is severedat one side of the flap by the use of one part of the string, and at the opposite side of the flap by the other part.

As shown in Fig. 7, however, a single string is used, which is secured at one end to the box and at its opposite end extends between the edge of the cover and the box-wall, and may be carried-around in the crack between the box-wall and cover at both sides of the latter so as to sever the paper sheet in the same manner as before set forth.

One simple means of securing the string D to the box is shownin Figs. 1 the middle part of the string is looped and tied around the hinged joint of the-cover, the

In the case of straw-board boxes, the board of the top is usually partiallycut through or scored at the hinged joint, in order to enable the lidto readily open, and in such case aacloth strip may sometimes be pasted overthejoint,

either upon the inner or outer surface of the cover and lid, as'shown, for instance, in'Fig. 7, in which the strip is shown, as appiied to the inner faeeof the top. This means of fastening may obviously be applied aswell to the double string: shownin Figs. l-and go the single string illustrated in sa-id It will be observed that in: the means for fastening the string shown in Figsl, 2, 3, and 42nd 1 n Fig. 8 the sheet or label 6 will be pasted upon or over the string, andin these cases and in any case in which the string is partially located and 2,in which and an abrnptshoulder is there the string may when the string is merely placed around the neck or hinge of the cover without tying, as shown Fig; 4, the outer or free ends of the said string may be crossed, so that a person opening the box will draw each end of the string around the side of the lid opposite to the side at which the inner partof the said end isfastened, whereby when the string has beendrawn back to the rear edge of the lid the string will be looped about the neck 11, and thereby held more firmly instead of being lo0sened,as would be the case if the strings were drawn in the op posite direction. By arranging the strings as shown in Fig. 4, therefore, any particular means for attaching the string to-the box may be dispensed with. The presence of the paper sheet or label in this and allothercases where the string passes outside of the lid tends-of ceurse'to hold the string in place, as above set forth.

From what has been stated above it will beapparent: th atthe particular construction in theflapor-therhi-nged joint, or in the means for attaching the string to the box wallor cover, is unimportant.. It is entirely obvious instance,

in this connection that theeoveringsheetmay sometimes bealonerelied upon. to form 'the hinged joint between the lid and box.

The form of the'co-ver andma-nner of attaching'the fitlfing will be determined in any particularcase by the-kind of box to which the said devices are to. be applied, the-essential feature of the device being a string attached so that it'may be carried. around-the edge: of the flap to sever the covering'sheeaas above set forth.

other'material which are constructed to project inwardly beyond the margins of the orifice, at one or more sides of the latter, so as totform ledges or supports F, against which the lid will strike when closed,'and which will operate to sustainthe lid flush with the wall of the box, and prevent its being depressed or thrust into the box under the pressure used. to paste down or over it the paper-sheet O. Said ledge or support is, however, useful in cases where the paper-sheet is absent, or where the cover is secured otherwise than by the said sheet, and the appended claims upon the ledge are not limited to its use in connection with the sheet as a means of fastening the cover and the opening-string, except as here- A preferable construction whereby the ledges or supports F may be readily formed in making the box is illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and '4, in which the-marginal portions of the side walls, A", of the box adjacent to the angles to the said side walls, as indicated at f, Figs. 3 and 4, the said inwardly-bent portions being of sufficient width to extend inwardly past or overlap .the side margins of the orifice in the wall A, so that when the said top wall is placed upon and pasted to the said inwardly-bent parts ledges or supports F-will be formed, as-above set forth. This construction affords a simple and convenient means of of the box, inasmuch as by it the inwardlybent parts may be readily pressed against the top for the purpose of fastening them by inserting'the fingers through the filling-orifice. The ledge or support F, as far as the appended claim covering said ledge in combination with the covering-sheet and string is concerned, may, however, be formed otherwise than above set forth-as, for instance, the construction shown in Fig.6 may be used, in which the marginal parts of the top' A are bent downwardly and inserted between the side walls, A, and the said ledges are formed by separate stripsf, properly glued or pasted to the under surface of the top.

It is to be understood that the appended claims cover the parts or elementstherein set forth when said parts or elements arein form to obtaineither, any, or all of the purposes, functions, objects, oradvantages obtained by or belonging to them in the particular form thereof herein illustrated. v

I claim as my inventionf v,

1. A paper box or canister provided with a filling-orifice in one of its walls, a-hinged cover or lid for covering said orifice, and a string attached to the box or lid andcapable of extending across the lid beneath the same, and out of the box between the lid and boxwall, substantially as described,

A paper box or canister provided with a filling-orifice in one of its walls, combined with a hinged cover or lid fitted within said orifice for closing it, a sheet or label secured to the box over the lid, and a string attached atone end to the box or lid, said string extending within the box and emerging therefrom between thelid and the box-wall,where-' by said string may be employed to sever the covering. sheet. or label, substantially'as described.

4. Apaper box or canister having av wall,

A, provided with a filling-orifice, and a hinged cover or lid for closing said orifice, and having the margins of its side walls adjacent to the wall'A bent inwardly and constructed to extend past the margin-pr margins of theorifice and secured to the said wallA, substantially as described.
