' UNITED STATES 'ATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE PLUMP'ION, OF WARRINGTON, COUNTY OF LANCASTER, ENGLAND.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 329,208, dated October 27,1885.
Application filed March 13,1885. Serial No. 158,743. (No model.) Patented in England January 25, 1884, No. 2,193.
T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE PLUMPTom'a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Warrington, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Tools for use by Gas-Fitters and others, (for which I have obtained a British patent, N 0. 2,123, dated January 25, 1884,) of which the following is a specification.
.This invention relates to combination-tools for use by gas-fitters and other artisans who have occasions to cut and joint gas-pipe or like small metallic tubing, or to perform other like operations.
The object of this invention is the effective combination, with such tools in the form of pliers or with pliers of any suitable form, of a die or pair of dies for screw-threading, cutting off, or cutting and trimming pipes or tubes, 850., and, preferably, also, alternatively, a reamer or screw-tap for reaming ortapping holes. A simple tool with a few interchangeable parts may thus constitute, for example, gas-pipe burners and flat pliers, cuttingpliers,
screw driver, pipe opener, pipe threader,
pipe-cutter, reamer, and screw-tap.
The said invention consists, first, in a peculiar construction of pliers, whereby said die or pair of dies is accommodated between the handles of the closed pliers and so as to be rotated by or held against rotation by the latter in an effective manner, while by the same means in part the pliers are adapted to be used alternat-ively as a T-handle for such reamer or screwtap; and, secondly, in certain specific combinations of parts whereby interchangeable sliding dies and pairs of dies are conveniently applied to pliers in the manner aforesaid.
A sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof.
Figure 1 of these drawings is a face view of a one-part threading-die combined with gasfitters pliers according to the first part of this invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the improved pliers, and Figs. 2 and 2 are elevations of said threading-die and a screw-tap adapted to be used alternatively therewith. Fig. 3 is a face view of a pair of threading-dies combined .with gas-fitters pliers and a screw attachment according to this invention. Fig. 4 is a like view of the pliers and screw attachment shown in Fig. 3,with a 'pairof pipecutting dies substituted for said thread ing-dies. Fig. 4. is an elevation of said screw attachment detached. Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section on the line 5 5, Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is an elevation of a substitute for the inner pipe-cutting die shown in Figs. 4 and 5, provided with an end-trimmer.
Like. letters of reference indicate the same and equivalent parts in the several figures.
In carrying out my invention I spread apart the handles a a ofthe pliers, and otherwise adapt them to receive and securely hold between them, when the pliers are closed, a threading-die, b, for example, the same being located close to the pivot c of the pliers, so as to be effectively clamped,whi1e the projecting handle ends and closed jaws afford ample leverage for turning it or holding it against rotation.
In so combining a one-part threading-die, b, with pliers I provide the die with square trunnions d d, and the respective handles with square socket-holes e e, to which said trunnions are fitted so as to occupy them while the die is in use, as represented by Fig. 1. The one-part threadingdie is preferably also constructed with a cylindrical counterbore, b, Fig. 1, fitted to the pipe end, so as to receive and guide the latter. Reamers and screw-taps (represented by said screw-tap, Fig. 2 are adapted to be combined with the pliers as substitutes for said threading-die b are provided on their inner sides with longitudinal way-flanges g 9. To these a pair of threading-dies, h h, for example, are fitted and applied, said flanges occupying grooves jaw.
in the lateral edges of the respective dies, as indicated in Fig. 3. An adjusting-screw, t, is fitted to and works in a correspondinglytapped central bore in a bridgepiece, j, (seen detached therewith in Fig. 42) the screw be ing perpendicular to the bridge-piece. The ends of said bridge-piece are accommodated by socket-holes 70 la in the handle a, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4, and have retaining-notches Z Z, Fig. 4", which enable it to look the handles together while the dies are being used. At the end of a threading operation the screw attachment if maybe detached, as illustrated by Fig. 4:, the threading-dies h h dropped out, and a pair of pipe'cutting dies, on m, for example, substituted therefor, as illustrated by Figs. 4 and 5. Said die on is providedwitharolling cutterorcutting-wheel, n,while said die m is a plain abutment die or To smooth the pipe end at the cutting operation I substitute for said inner die, m, an inner die, of, Fig. 6, having an adjustable end-trimmer, 16", the shank of which is a screw occupying the correspondingly-tapped bore of a milled nut, 0, within a suitable recess in the die, as shown by full and dotted lines in the figure.
In both forms of my improved combinationtool I have used as its basis gas-fitters pliers having pipe and burner concaves z y and flat holding-surfaces w in their jaws, together with wire-cutters w, a screw-driver, U, and a pipeopener, '10, but I do not consider all or any of these special features of the pliers essential to my combination-tool as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my said improvement in combination-tools for use by gas-fitters and others, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification- 1. A pair of pliers having their handles spread apart adjacent to their pivot and provided with square socket-holes perpendicular to their inner walls, substantially as herein specified, whereby they are adapted to hold threading-dies or the like between the handles, or alternatively to be used as a T-handle for a reamer or screw-tap, as herein set forth.
2. The combination of a sliding die, a pair of pliers having handles spread apart and provided with internal way-flanges to receive and hold or guide said die, and a screw attachment composed of a bridge-piece having a central nut-bore, and adapted to be interlocked with the respective handles, and a perpendicular screw engaging at its inner end with said die, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore specified, of a pair of dies having grooved lateral edges, a pair of pliers having handles spread apart from adjacent to their pivot, and provided with inwardly-projecting wayflanges to receive and hold said dies when the pliers are closed, and a screw attachment composed of a bridge-piece having a central nut-bore and notchedends, and a perpendicular screw working in said bore and engaging at its inner end with the sliding die of said pair of dies, said handles having also a pair of socket-holes to engage with said bridgepiece, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. PLUMPTON.
