U IT D STATES PATENT Orrrcm \VILLIAM S. CLAY, OF HARRISBURG, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-TI-IIRDS TO MILLER I. KAST, OF MECHANIOSBURG, AND DAVID R. MILLER, OF HARRISBURG,
PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION-WRENCH;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,707, dated November 27, 1894. Application filed April 26,1893. Serial No. 71,964. (no model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. CLAY, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combination-Tool, which I name the Combination Radiator-Wrench, to beUsed by Steam-Fitters and Plumbers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to combination tools or wrenches adapted for various uses and more particularly for steam fitters and plumbers uses; and among the objects sought to be attained are to provide a tool of the character described which is simple and in t5 expensive in construction, durable and efficient in operation.
A further object of my invention is to provide a tool which may be effectively used for turning nuts and pipes of various sizes and for turning valve couplings or nipples, of different sizes, and with the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings and pointed out in the appended claims- In the drawings: Figure l is a side view of my improved device, the removable pipegripping jaw being shown in operative posi- 0 tion. Fig. 2 is a like view the said jaw being removed. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the removable jaw; Fig. 5, a vertical sectional View thereof. ,Fig. 6 is a side view of the le- 3 5 ver for turning the device.
In carrying out my invention I provide the wrench 1, the body portion 2 of which is provided at one end with the flattened and broadened portion or jaw 3 which latter is cut away or recessed as at 4. Said recess (or recesses) I has the parallel sides 5, 5 and 6, 6, the distance between the sides 5, 5 being somewhat greater than the distance between the sides seen at 8 and 9, said portion 8 being ofgreater diameter than the portion.9. The
said portions 8, 9 are provided with two (or more if desired) notches or recesses 10 10 respectively arranged opposite each other and said portions 8, 9 are adapted to be inserted 5; within. ordinary valve nipples or couplings which usually are provided with internal projecting ribs which will thus engage within the notches 10, and when the device is turned the nipple or coupling will be turned also.
For turning the wrench I may employ any desired means but preferably the lever or tool 11, which is adapted to be inserted through openings 12, formed in the body of the wrench, said lever or tool being provided at one end with a claw and having its opposite end pointed'whereby said tool may, when detached from the wrench be used for extracting nails or tacks and as a screw driver.
For the purpose of adapting the device for use in turning pipes or tubing I employ a detachable jaw 13 which is adapted to fit snugly within the recess 4 of the wrench and to be removed therefrom when the wrench is to be used upon nuts as before explained.
The jaw 13 is provided with the-upper and lower parallel sides 14:, 14, which are grooved as at 15 to receive the edges of the recess 4 of the wrench and said jaw is also recessed as at 16 to form shoulders17 to abut against the shouldersof the wrench. The rear edge of the jaw is shaped to correspond with the shape of the rear wall of the recess 4 and is also recessed as at 18 to receive the edge of said wall. It will thus be seen that the jaw may be readily slipped into the recess 4 and when in place therein will be snugly held.
The jaw 13 is provided with a tapering re-. cess 19, or cut out portion, oneedge of which is serrated or toothed as at 20 to enable said jaw to firmlygrip a pipe. By reason of the taper of the'recess 19 different sizes of pipes may be operated upon.
Instead of using the construction of detachable jaw 13 just described, I may employ 9 5 other constructions of detachable j aw adapted to be used with my device for operating upon difierent kinds of fixtures, 850.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Ina tool of the character described, the combination with the main or body portion provided at one end with a jaw having recesses adapted to receive different sizes of nuts, of a supplementary jaw adapted to detachably fit within the said recesses, and provided with a tapered recess or opening, the latter being serrated or toothed and adapted to receive different sizes of pipes, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a tool of the character described, the main or body portion provided at one end with a jaw having recesses adapted to receive ditferent sizes of the nuts, and its opposite end being reduced to form cylindrical portions of different diameters, each of said portions being provided with oppositely located notches, for the purposes specified.
3. In a tool of the character described, the combination with the main or body portion provided at one end with a jaw having recesses of different sizes and the opposite bearing shoulders intermediate said recesses, of a supplementary jaw adapted to detachably fit within said recesses and provided with 25 opposite bearing shoulders adapted to seat against the shoulders first mentioned, and said supplementary jaw being also provided with a tapered opening or recess, which latter is serrated or toothed and adapted to re ceive different sizes of pipes, for the purpose specified.
4:. In a tool of the character described the combinationwith the main or body portion provided at one end with a jaw having recesses adapted to receive difierent sizes of nuts, ot a supplementary jaw adapted to detachably fit within said recesses, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto set my hand and seal, in presence of two witnesses, this 13th day of April, 1893.
