W.- H. BARR.
FIRE ESCAPE.
No. 328,637. Patented Oct. 20, 1885.
UNITED STATES FFICE,
ATENT Fl RE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,637, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed May 23, 1885. Serial No. 166,484. (No model.)
1'0 (ZZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HUDDLESTON BARR,of Grove Spring, in the county of Wright and State of Missouri, have invented an Iniproved Fire-Escape,ot' which the following is a specification.
The special object of this invention is to improve step-rod escape-ladders so that all the step-rods will be connected together on both sides, and thus re-enforce them to avoid the danger of breakage. \Vhen people are in danger, and in a high state of excitement, a sure looting is required and a convenient side hold for their hands.
In order to accomplish these objects, I adopt means which will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing the life-escape applied to the side or end of a residence or other building. Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the location and attachment of the rods with respect to the house. V
In the drawings, A represents the step rods carrying at each end a staple, a, which are integral with the rods, and are driven into the house side or end in anysuitable or well-known Way.
B represents a wire which may be as large or larger than an ordinary telegraph-Wire,and is wound around the steprods at the angles a so as to connect and cause them to serve as a mutual support to one another. There is preferably one on each side, and extending from top to bottom, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. These side wires not only connect and greatly strengthen the foot-hold, but they also afford a very convienent hand-hold and efi'ectually prevent the fingers of one person from being mashed by another who is coming down after him.
WVith my present improvement the step-rod fire-escape is cheap, simple, and thoroughly effective.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
A fire-escape ladder consisting of the steps A a a, connected at the angles a by the wires B B, wound around them, substantially as shown and described.
