G. W. LEVI.
PIRE ESCAPE. No. 252,839. Patented Jan. 24,1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE W. LEVI, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF TO M. J. DUFFY AND LOUIS KOSIAL, OF SAME PLAGE.
FI RE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,839, dated January 24, 1882.
Application filed October 24, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON LEVI, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson, and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front and Fig. 2 a side elevation of our device, showing its application and method of attachment.
y The main object I have in view is to provide a fire-escape which from its capability of resisting heat will afford a sure means of exit from a burning building.
My invention consists in such combination and arrangement of devices as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to avail themselves of its benetits, I will now proceed to describe its construction and use.
A represents a pipe of suitable size, which connects with thc companys main pipe.
B B represent branch pipes, which are preferably joined at bottom and top, and the connection of these pipes at their lower ends is united to the pipe A, thus admitting of a continuous dow of water through them, as will be presently more fully seen. lIhe stand-pipe A and also the connecting-joint at the upper ends of the pipes B B are provided with hose-connections a c.
O C are the cross-bars or rounds of the ladder, which are also composed of pipeand sui-t-A culation or flow through the branch pipes B B` and rounds C O, thus effect-ually preventing them from becomingimpaired by reason of the heat or too Warm to be used as an escape from the burning building.
I am aware that escape-ladders have been made from piping so connected that a current of water can be forced through the same, and therefore do not claim such, broadly, as my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a freescape ladder, the combination of branch pipes B B, cross-pipes O C, hoseconnections a a, platform E E, and stand-pipe A, all in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a lire-escape ladder, of the branch pipes B B, having tackle attachments d d, and platforms E E, with railings I) b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3 The within-described fire-escape ladder, consisting of the branch pipes B B, cross-pipes C O, stand-pipe A', platforms E E, and tackle attachments d d, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE WASHINGTON LEVI.
Witnesses:
LoUIs Kosmr., LEE CHAMBERS.
