FOLDING TABLE'AND SEAT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,246, dated October 13, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, ALLIsE NEUTASCHER, of

Mendota, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Folding Tables and Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to tables and seats which are adapted to be folded up against the wall of a room, out of the way when not in use; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my devices in position for use, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the table and seat folded up and secured against the wall.

Ois my table,the inner reduced end of which is secured to the wall (or other support) by means of the hinges a a. At the free or front end of this table, on its under side, are secured two cleats or transverse strips, 0 0, whose inner side edges are beveled, as shown,to form guides or ways for an extension-leaf, 0, whose side edges are correspondingly beveled. This extension-leafiin the form shown,is well adapted to serve as an ironing-board, though it may serve for any other purpose desired, and to give additional security the cleats c 0 may each have a slight inward-extending lip, as shown, beneath the leaf 0.

O (J represent the crossed legs of the table, secured together at the center by screw 0" and mortise and tenon, and fastened to the cleat 0 by hinges c 0 whereby, when the table 0 is folded back up against the wall A, the said legs may also be folded back against the table, hanging down from the cleat 0,- but when the table is let down the legs may be brought at right angles to the line of the table, as shown in Figs. 2 and 1, respectively.

D D D represent my folding and adjustable seats. The seat D is hinged to the wall (or other support) A by hinges b, in similar manner to the way in which my table is secured, while the seats D D are secured at their inner ends to the ends of the seat D by means of the pivots or rivets d d, on which they may freely turn, so that, if desired, the seats D might be extended along the wall A in line with the seat D, although ordinarily they would be used in the positions shown in the full lines in Fig. 1, in line with the sides of the table 0. Near each free end of the seats D D are the hinged crossed legs D D, secured to the under sides of the said seats by hinges dd, and otherwise constructed similarly tothe legs 0 of the table. As already stated, the inner end of the table 0 is reduced or cut away at its rear end, as shown at c c, and the space thus left is designed to receive a child or other person unable to sit upright without support, which is afforded by the rods E E. These rods are preferably of metal, and slide in loops or staples e e, which are driven into the under side of the table. The ends of the rods nearest the front of the table are bent, as shown at e e, and these hooked ends, when the rods are not in use, are turned into the hooks ff near said front end of the table and hang suspended therefrom; but when in use, as in penning a child into the space between them and the cutaway portion of the inner end of the table, then thesehooked ends e are hooked into the other central hooks, f f, of the table. Other staples, a a, are driven into the wall (or other support) at pointswhich come between the table and the seats D D, when these parts are elevated out of the way, and then securingpins a a are inserted in said staples, effectually preventing either the table or the seats from falling down.

My invention will be found very serviceable wherever it is desirable to economize space, and also when the tables and seats are only required for temporary use, or for use at certain intervals, and when at other times the space they occupy when in use is needed for other purposes. They are well adapted for kitchens and dining-rooms, and are also very suitable for halls and saloons. If desired, the wall-hinges may be made removable, or with half of each hinge removable, so that the tables and seats may be stored away and yet be capable of instant adjustment and use when required, and any desired degree of ornamentation or finish may be given to the said devices.

I am aware that heretofore folding tables and seatshave been hinged to walls or other vertical supports and provided at their free ends with projecting plates having pivoted IOO thereto legs or supports for sustaining the platform in a horizontal position, and such I do not claim.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A table secured by hinges to a vertical support and having crossed legs hinged to its free end, in combination with adjustable seats hinged similarly to said support, but at aloWer vertical plane, the said seatsbeing made in th ree sections, and the outer sections having crossed legs hinged to their free ends and being pivoted at their rear ends to the central section, which is hinged to the said support, substantiallyas set forth.
