IMPROVEMENT IN DESKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,404, dated March 7, 1876; application filed January 15, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1,OHARLEs A, ATKINSON, of the, city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Writing- Desk, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists of the door which closes the upper portion of the desk, and swings down to form the writing-table, contrived to shift up and down for altering the height to suit different persons, also to use either sitting or standing, and at the same time to be adjusted either flat or more or less inclined.

with a hook, J, on the upper end, which engages with a vertical notched bar, K, and holds the inner edge of the door at any height along the grooves E, and also supports the outer part either level or inclined, according as the braces are adjusted, said braces being extensible and fastening with a set-screw, M. Thedoor can be adjusted for height, and also for inclination, without the counterbalanced weight and cords; but it shuts up and "down more conveniently with them.

Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I y 1. The door A, pivoted to the vertically-adjustable slides D, and having hook-ended braces I, in combination with the vertical notched bars K, substantially as specified.

2. The braces I, madeextensihle, in combination with set-screws M, as and for the purpose described.

3. The case-door above top of desk, pivoted to blocks counterbalanced and made vertically adjustable, as and for the purpose specified.
