Definitions
- This invention relates to inking arrangements for printing presses and, more particularly, to novel means for adjusting the position of an inking roller in a printing press and for permitting removal of the inking roller from the printing press without disturbing the adjusted setting thereof.
- inking rollers are arranged in contact with one or more so-called friction rollers.
- the latter have covers of elastic material, such as rubber, gelatin, plastic, etc.
- the inking rollers cannot be fixedly mounted in the frame of the printing press because the inking rollers, which are subject to wear, must be adjustable relative to the friction roller or rollers to compensate for variations in diameter of the inking roller. It is also desirable, when the machine is at rest, that the inking rollers do not remain in contact with the printing rollers or with the form, so as to prevent deformations in the elastic material such as might occur if the inking roller is maintained in contact with a stationary roller over a long interval.
- the inking rollers, and particularly their mountings must be so designed that they may be set off and disassembled from the printing press without any difficulty.
- the locking adjustable support is positioned in the frame and has a bearing journal projecting on the inner side of the frame wall. Adjustment of the inking roller position can be effected from the outside of the machine frame. However, such adjustment is cumbersome inasmuch as the contact of the inking roller with the friction roller or rollers, or with the form, on the inside of the frame, must be checked while the adjustment is being effected from outside the frame.
- the support is arranged on the inside of the machine frame and adjusted from the inside, rather than from the outside of the frame where the driving wheels for the friction rollers preferably are arranged.
- This latter support includes an axially displaceable eccentric bearing pin, which is axially adjusted by means of a rack and a manually operated pinion. Fine adjustment of the inking roller is obtained by angular adjustment of the eccentric bearing pin inside of the machine frame.
- An object of the present invention is to provide a support for a printing press roller, and which support may be adjusted and locked in adjusted position, but which is simple in construction and simple to operate.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a locking adjustable support for a roller of a printing press, and providing for ready removal of the roller from the printing press without disturbing the adjusted setting of the roller when the latter is re-inserted into the printing press.
- a further object of the invention is to provide a locking adjustable support for inking rollers of printing presses and which is readily adaptable to situations where the inking roller is used with a single friction roller or with a pair of friction rollers, and which further provides for easy adjustment of the degree of contact of the inking roller with either one of a pair of friction rollers.
- Still another object of the invention is to provide a locking adjustable support for inking rollers of printing presses by means of which the inking roller may be used in operative relation with other rollers having a contact over the full circumference thereof or which have a contact over only part of their circumference, and which is readily adaptable for use with printing forms having less than 360 extent, such as the plates applied to the cylinders or rotary letter presses or the like.
- the locking adjustable support of the present invention comprises an eccentric sleeve which is angularly adjustable about a guide pin or trunnion.
- This sleeve has a first arcuate slot or gap arranged to permit ready removal of an inking roller forn the support, and is also formed with a circumferentially extending slot arranged to receive a locking or clamping pin or bolt.
- the eccentric sleeve further has a longitudinally extending bore receiving a projecting locating pin.
- An adjusting ring is angularly adjustable on the guide trunnion and has set screw means or the like for locking it in an angularly adjusted position.
- This adjusting ring has a bore receiving a projected locating pin which can contact the locating pin on the eccentric sleeve, when the adjusting ring is adjusted angularly relative to the eccentric sleeve, whereby the adjusting ring can. be locked, by its set screw means, in a position maintaining the adjusted position of the eccentric sleeve.
- the clamping means for the eccentric sleeve preferably includes a ring rotata-bly mounted on the eccentric sleeve and carrying a pin extending through the circumferentially extending slot of the eccentric sleeve and threaded into the mounting trunnion. Upon tightening of the locking bolt or pin, this ring compresses the eccentric sleeve against the guide trunnion to hold the eccentric sleeve in adjusted position.
- FIG. 1 is a somewhat schematic diametrical sectional View of the eccentric sleeve and associated parts for adjusting the position of the inking roller;
- FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 illustrating the sleeve rotated through
- FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 1, but illustrating the eccentric sleeve rotated through 180';
- FIG. 4 is a diametric sectional view taken essentially on the line II of FIG. 5;
- FIG. 5 is an axial sectional view through a locking adjustable support embodying the invention.
- FIG. 6 is a plan view, with parts being shown in section, of the locking adjustable support of FIGS. 1-5
- FIG. 7 is an elevation view corresponding to FIG. 6;
- FIGS. 8 and 9 are views similar to FIG. 4 illustrating an alternative embodiment of the invention and showing two different angularly adjusted positions of the eccentric sleeve;
- FIG. 10 is an axial sectional view through the locking adjustable support shown in FIGS. 8 and 9;
- FIG. 11 is an elevation view of the locking adjustable support shown in FIGS. 8 and 9, and with a part in section being taken in a plane at right angles to the plane of FIG. 10.
- the locking adjustable support for inking rollers of printing presses includes a substantially fixed guide pin or trunnion 1 which is formed with diametrically slotted guide means 2, known per se, into which an anti-friction bearing 4 for an inking roller axle 3 may be mounted.
- An eccentric sleeve 5 and an adjusting ring 6 are mounted for angular adjustment on guide trunnion 1, and a sleeve 7 is concentric with the external surface of sleeve 5 and is angularly adjustable thereon.
- the diametrically slotted guide means 2 of trunnion 1 could also receive the axle of an inking roller which is not supported in anti- .friction bearings.
- Eccentric sleeve 5 has a segmental recess '8 at its inner end, by means of which the inking roller shaft and its bearing means, if any, may be removed from the support and re-introduced thereinto.
- Sleeve 5 is further formed, as best seen in FIGS. 4 and 5, with a circumferentially extending slot 9 extending through a little more than 180. In a manner to be described, this slot 9 limits the angular adjustment of sleeve 5 to about 180.
- the Outer end of sleeve 5 is formed with a groove extending peripherally thereof and opening toward the outer end of sleeve 5. A bore 10 opens into this peripheral grove and receives a locating pin 11 which projects into the groove.
- the adjusting ring 6 is mounted in substantial axial abutment with the outer end of eccentric sleeve 5, and ring 6 is formed with a bore 12 in which is seated a locating pin 13 extending into the aforementioned peripheral groove in the end of sleeve 5.
- Ring 7 is seated on a reduced diameter portion of eccentric sleeve 5 and is positioned between a shoulder formed on sleeve 5 and a side surface of ring 6.
- Ring 7 is formed with a radial opening 14 through which extends a locking bolt, screw or pin 15.
- the shank of element 15 furthermore projects, with clearance, through the circumferentially extending slot 9 of the eccentric ring 5, and is threaded for engagement into a threaded radial bore 16 in guide trunnion 1.
- Ring 7 has an axial extent such as to close the slot 9.
- the outer end of pin or trunnion 1 is formed with a circular or annular lug 17, and an axial passage extends through the outer end of trunnion 1, being enlarged adjacent the inner end of the trunnion.
- This axial passage receives a mounting or locking bolt Referring to FIG. 6, if the locking adjustable support for an inking roller, as shown in FIGS. 1-5, is to be used with an inking roller which is to be maintained in engagement with two friction rollers, the extension 17 of trunnion 1 is seated in a circular recess 19 in the outer surface of flange or plate 18, and the inner end of locking bolt 20 is threaded into a threaded bore concentric with the recess 19.
- a bush 21 is seated in a circular opening in flange 18, this opening being offset from the recess 19.
- a bolt or screw 22 is seated in bush 21 and secures the locking adjustable support to the frame or side wall 23 of the printing press, bolt 22 being threaded into a suitable threaded -bore in the wall 23.
- the flange or plate 18 is adjustable about the axis of bolt 22 through the medium of the bush 21.
- the flange or plate 18 can be tightened in the desired position by means of a bolt or screw 24 which extends through a slot 25 in plate 18 adjacent the free end thereof.
- a circular spacer or the like 26 can be interposed between the outer end of trunnion 1 and the wall 23 of the printing press. It should be understood, however, that the locking adjustable inking roller support may be secured directly to the wall of the printing press, without the interposition of the spacer, if the axle of the inking roller is correspondingly extended or elongated.
- eccentric sleeve 5 When eccentric sleeve 5 is in the position shown in FIG. 1, the inking roller can be introduced into or removed from its locking adjustable support. By turning the eccentric sleeve counterclockwise from the position shown in FIG. 1 to the position in FIGS. 2 and 3, the inking roller is adjusted upwardly or toward the friction roller or rollers.
- eccentric sleeve 5 When the inking roller is in the desired position, eccentric sleeve 5 is clamped in its adjusted angular relation by tightening locking screw 15.
- Set screw 27 is then loosened, and adjusting ring 6 is turned sufliciently far that locating pin 13 will engage locating pin 11. Adjusting screw 27 is then re-tightened to lock ring 6 in its angularly adjusted position with pins 13 and 11 in engagement.
- eccentric sleeve 5 may be turned into the position shown in FIG. 1.
- eccentric sleeve 5 is turned until locating pins 11 and 13 are again in contiguous juxtaposition. t The inking roller is now in exactly the same adjusted position as before its removal, and locking screw 15 is re-tightened to lock sleeve 5 in position.
- the embodiments of the locking adjustable supports so far described are suitable only in the case where the inking rollers are to be pressed against other rollers having an uninterrupted circumference or a contact surface which extends through a full 360.
- the locking adjustable supports so that the inking roller may be pressed against printing forms having an interrupted circumference such as, for example, the platetype cylinders of rotary letter presses equipped with stereo-type plates, or offset cylinders provided with clamping grooves.
- a T-shape slot 28 is formed in guide pin or trunnion 1, and slidably receives a T- shape slide 29 having a forward extension 30 overlying the anti-friction bearing for the inking roller.
- Extension 30 is arcuate to conform to the circular outer surface of the outer race of the anti-friction bearing.
- Slide 29 is formed with a radial recess 31 from the inner end of which extends a very small diameter radial bore 32.
- Recess 31 serves to seat suitable relatively strong spring means, such as cup springs 33, and a guide pin 34 extends axially of recess 31 and has a slidable fit in its extension 32.
- a slide 35 is secured to the outer end of pin 34 and is biased outwardly by the spring 33. Axial displacement of slide 35 is prevented by a segment 36 secured by screw 37 to extension 30 of slide 29.
- FIGS. 8-11 also provides for the inking rollers being removed from the locking adjustable support and re-inserted therein in the previously adjusted position, although the means for doing this are shown in detail in FIGS. 1-5 and have not been shown or described in detail in the embodiment of FIGS. 8-9 although they are included therein as will be apparent upon inspection of FIGS. 8-11.
- eccentric sleeve 5 and adjustable ring 6 the peripheries of these two elements are provided with radial recesses such as 38 and 39, respectively, which can receive a spike, mandrel or the like for operation of the sleeve 5 and the ring 6.
