Description

Oct. 4, 1966 E. COLOMBU Filed March 20, 1964 United States Patent 1 Claim. (:1. 1s-s The centrifugal pots employed more especially in the centrifugal spinning of artificial and synthetic filaments are provided with a detachable cover which is held fast on an inner cut-away portion of the edge of the pot by appropriate means during the winding of the filament.
The cover has a central hole for the passage of the spinning funnel actuated with a vertical reciprocating movement which ensures the formation of the cross filament layers of the cake thus formed in the pot. The cover is generally flat and its horizontal bearing plane corresponds to the uppermost position of the vertical reciprocating movement of the funnel.
It is known that the movement of the funnel is not exactly followed by the filament owing to the free length of filament between the funnel and the inner wall of the pot.
At each end of travel of the funnel, the turns are parallel to one another instead of being crossed and can thus slide between the cover and its seat on the pot if the closure is not perfect.
These turns are likely to be damaged by the sliding efiect of the cover, which results in Weak points and even breakage's on the subsequent unwinding of the cake. Also, they may be simply entangled with other turns, which also give rise to a possibility of breaking during subsequent unwinding.
The invention makes it possible to obviate these disadvantages in a simple manner, namely by means of a convex, bell-shaped profile of the cover instead of the usual fiat form.
This arrangement also aflords the advantage of increasing the useful capacity of *a centrifugal pot for given vertical dimensions and of imparting to the cover a better dimensional stability.
The invention will be more readily understood from an embodiment which is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a sectional elevation of a pot and cover.
"ice
.The drawing shows a cover seated on a circular bearing surfiace within the edge of a pot. The figure illustrates only the upper portion of the pot 1, with the groove 2 tor the resilient annular coil fior securing the cover 3. The coil has not been shown. It may be replaced, for example, by a known open ring spring.
The cover 3 has a central hole 4 for the passage of the vertically reciprocable tunnel. The cover 3 is convex and comprises a skirt 5 on its periphery, which centers the cover on the pot. The said skirt has at 6 a conical inlet to facilitate the positioning of the cover in the pot. It bears under the effect of the vertical reaction due to the coil, on a machined circular portion 7 of the pot.
The internal profile of the cover is exactly fitted to the internal diameter of the pot. The cover may be moulded from an appropriate plastic material, its bell shape imparting to it a rigidity which is not possessed by the cover of fiat -form, which very ofiten becomes warped.
Owing to the fiact that the bearing plane of the bellshaped cover is oifset *at a certain distance below the upper dead-center of the vertical reciprocating movement, the turns of filament, when travelling past this hearing plane, are inclined in relation to the latter and thus cannot become engaged between the cover and the pot if the contact between the two is not perfect.
What is claimed is:
A cover for a pot for the centrifugal spinning of artificial and synthetic filaments, having a horizontal upper rim, said cover having a bell-shaped form with a tapering in the downward direction, which is seated on said upper rim of the centrifugal pot, said bell-shaped cover extending above said rim and having \a central opening for passage of a spinning funnel, said skirt having an internal diameter equal to the internal diameter of the pot.
