ROBERT P. BROYVN AND EDXVARD L. BAILEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,379, dated September 29, 1885.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT P. BROWN and EDWARD L. BAILEY, both citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a box embodying our invention. Fig. 2 repre sents a top view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a top view thereof, the outer flaps being open. Fig. 4 represents a view of the box in folded condition. Fig. 5 represents a view of the blank or form of the box spread out or unfolded.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Our invention consists of a triangular or sector shaped box formed of sides, top folds, innerlocking-tongues, and outerlocking-fiaps, and provided with kerfs or score-marks so 10- eated and arranged as to render said box capable of being flattened out for packing and shipment after the side flaps have been glued or otherwise permanently secured to the body of the box, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A A B B represent the sides of a box, the sides A Abeing quadrilateral and the sides B B sectorshaped, the side A having a pastingstrip, O, which is guinnied or otherwise fastened to the side B, and a strip, D, which is gummed or otherwise fastened to the bottom of the side A, whereby the sides and bottom of the box are firmly connected.
At the top of the sides B are folds E E, and at the top of the sides B are folds E E.
At the top of the side B is a lockingtonguc, F, and at the top of the side B is a lockingtongue, F, it being noticed that the tongue F is between the folds E E and the tongue F between the folds E E, and that tongues F F interlock laterally. At the top of the sides A A are flaps G G, respectively, the flap G having tongues H, which are adapted to enter the slots H, for the purpose of locking the flaps G G.
WVhen the box is to be closed, the folds E E are brought toward each other and the tongues F F interlocked, whereby lateral separation of the folds and tongues is prevented. The flaps G G are then folded over the folds and tongues E E F F and interlocked, it being noticed that said flaps G G fold over the last-named folds and tongues at a right angle thereto and cover the same, whereby the tongues F F are prevented from unlocking. and thus the box is securely closed.
The box may be readily opened by separating the flaps G G, whereby access is had to the tongues F F, which are then also separated, and the folds E E may be raised, and thus theinterior or contents of the box are accessible.
In the sides B and B score-marks or kerfs J and J are made, running from the lower points, K and K,across the said sides in a direct line and equidistant between the corners K and K, and extending up through the center of the locking-tongues F and F, as shown in the drawings. \Vhen the box has been formed by having its sides A and B glued or otherwise permanently attached to the securing-strips O and D, the box may be flattened out, as seen in Fig. 4, by creasing the said sides B and B in the kerfs or score-marks J and J, thus giving facility for shipping in compact form.
The parts enumerated as composing the box are made of one piece of sufficiently stout paper, pasteboard, card-board, &c., it being seen that the sides of the body are not weakened by slots, but are greatly strengthened by the positive connection of the sides A B by means of the strip 0, and bottom of the sides A A by the strip D.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sector-shaped box having quadrilateral sides A A and sector-shaped sides B B, with securing-strips G D, the said sides B B having flaps with locking-tongues F F,formed so as to lock sidewise or laterally with each other, substantially as described.
2. A sector-shaped paper box formed of a single piece of material, having the opposite IOO sides,B 13, provided with flaps having tongues interlocking sidewise orlaterally, as described,
4. A sector -shaped box, substantially as and side A, having a flap with tongues H H described, provided with the kerfs or scoremarks J J, for the purpose set forth.
interlocking with flap G having slots [-1 H,
5 substantially as described.
3. A paper boX of sector shape, formed of sides A A B B, with the securingstrips O D i and top-closing parts, consisting of the folds E \Vitnesses:
