To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANZ THORMANN and LEONHARD VON EoNuoRsT, citizens of the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, re siding at the city of Wiesbaden, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombs, (for which we have obtained Letters Patent in Germany, No. 30,805, granted December 30, 1884, and dated August 13, 1884; in Belgium, No. 66,008, dated August 12, 1884; in France, No. 163,730, dated August 12, 1884; in Italy, No. 17,246 and No. 183, dated October 31, 1884; in Austria-Hungary, No. 30,577 and No. 46,739, dated October 19, 1884; in Denmark, No. 1,445, dated May 4, 1885; in Spain, No. 6,384, dated November 20, 1884; in Sweden September 23, 1884; in Norway, dated December 2, 1884, and in England, No. 11,206, dated August 12, 1884,) of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in longitudinal section, of ourimproved comb. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same; Fig. 3, a top view, partly in horizontal section, online .90 y, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a horizontal section of the strips for fastening the teeth into the backof the comb.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The back a of the comb is grooved and made of U shape in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 2, forming thus a guide-casing for the heads of the teeth I). The heads of the teeth I) are fitted into the grooved back and provided with openings, so that when all the teeth are inserted into the back a channel is formed through which two guide-strips, c 0, can be placed, which meet near the center of the comb. These guide-strips are together of somewhat less length than the back, and are provided at their outer ends with threaded shanks d and screw-nuts e. The inner ends of both rods are forked or recessed and provided at both sides with longitudinal grooves into which a rubber band, f, is placed in such a manner that the forked or recessed ends of the guide-strips are pressed toward each other.
The comb is put together in the following manner: The heads of the teeth I) are inserted, one after the other, into the back a until the same is filled up. The guide-strips c c are first connected by the rubber band f, and are then pushed through the openings in the heads of the teeth until the shank d of one of the guide-rods appears at the opposite end of the back. The screw-nuts e are then screwed on the shanks d until the rubber band is sufficiently stretched, whereby all the teeth are rigidly secured to the back. The screw-nuts press against the outer teeth and prevent the teeth from getting loose in the back.
The teeth may be of different thickness, so that the interstices between the same may be greater at one end and smaller at the other end, as in the combs generally in use.
Instead of the guide-strips described rods of round, oval, or other cross-section, or tubes, may be used.
In place of the rubber band a spiral spring may be interposed between the inner ends of the guide-strips.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a comb, the combination, with the grooved back and teeth having tangs adapted to be inserted in said groove, said tangs being provided with transverse openings, of guidestrips passing through said openings, heads on the outer ends of said guide-strips, and a spring for drawing said guide-strips into position to clamp said teeth in place, substantially as described.
2. In a comb, the combination, with the grooved back and teeth having tangs adapted to be inserted in said groove, said tangs being provided with transverse openings, of guidestrips passing through said openings and having screw-threaded outer ends, nuts forming heads on the outer ends of said guide-strips, and a spring for drawing said guidestrips into position to clamp said teeth in place, substantially as described.
3. In a comb, the combination, with the grooved back and teeth having tangs adapted to be inserted in said groove, said tangs being provided with transverse openings, of guidestrips passing through said openings and having longitudinal side grooves, heads on the outer ends of said guide-strips, and rubber bands placed in said side grooves for drawing said guide-strips into position to clamp said teeth in place, substantially as described.
4. In a comb, the combination, with the grooved back and teeth having tangs adapted to be inserted in said groove, said tangs being provided with transverse openings, of guidestrips passing through said openings and having longitudinal side grooves, the outer ends ofsaid guide-strips being screw-threaded, nuts forming heads 'on the outerends'of said guide- 15 strips, and rubber bands placed in said side grooves for drawing said guidestripsinto position to clamp said teeth in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof We have signed our 20 names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANZ THORMANN. LEONHARD VON BONHORST.
