SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,226, dated September 29, 1885.

To (LZJ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WARREN R. Emacs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Students Drafting- Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in the arrangement of the various implements and paraphernalia for drafting and sketching purposes, and has for its object to provide suitable and convenient receptacles for the various implements and materials used for such purposes, and to combine them in a compact and advantageous form which will allow their safe keeping and the ready facility of their adaptation, and prevent disorder when in use and disarrangment when the receptacle is carried; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter fully and in detail explained and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may more fully understand the same, I will proceed to describe the construction and adaptation of the same, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improvement with the cover thrown back and held in this position by any suitable device; Fig. 2, a section taken at the lineXX of Fig. 1, showing the inner edge of the cover cut away in order to permit the head of the T-square to slide without and beyond the cover.

Similar letters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.

A is the box proper, and B the cover.

0 O are two strips which divide the box into three compartments, D E F, adapted to accommodate, respectively, the instruments, such as pens, compasses, dividers, &c., and the ink-well, the drawing or sketching paper, and a drawer containing brushes, ink, and. colors. On these partitions the drawingboard G is secured in any ordinary manner.

H is a strip of any suitable material secured to the strip 0 and the side of the box and ex tending throughout the entire width of the latter. The arrangement of this strip H relative to the drawingboard and the side of the box is such that the horizontal plane of said strip is slightly below the plane of the upper surface of said board and side, so that a guide way is thereby formed within which the head of the T-square I readily slides, the blade of the square extending across the drawing-board in its proper relative positon thereto; also by the arrangement of the strip H, the compartment F is inclosed and adapted to receive a drawer, J, within which may be kept brushes, colors, &o., as previously set forth.

The drawing-board forms a top to the compartment E, within which is contained the drawing-paper. The cover B is partitioned into three compartments in the same manner as the box, the two lateral receptacles K L being for the accommodation of a drawer containing rubbers and erasers, and various kinds of lead pencils and rules. The central compartment, M, is adapted to contain drawing cards or patterns, and it may be also utilized for finished drawings.

The strip N which forms the back of the box is united by screws or otherwise to the drawing-board, and to this strip the cover is hinged.

O is any suitable devicepivoted to the side of the box and adapted to hold the cover back in an elevated position slightly inclined from a right angle to said box, all of which will be clearly seen and readily understood by reference to Fig. l.

The back of the box is cut away, as shown at P, on alevel with the strip H, and the back of the cover corresponding with this part of the box is also cut away, as shown at Q, Fig. 2, in order to allow the head of the T-square to project without the box and thereby enable the draftsman to utilize said square close to the top of the board.

Protractors, triangles, scrolls, &c., may be set between the drawing-cards and the inner face of the cover, as shown at Fig. l.

The cover, when closed, is secured to the box by any well-known and suitable means.

I do not wish to be confined to the exact lo cation or relative position of the several lat- ICO eral compartments, as they may be interchanged without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I am aware that various devices have been constructed to serve as receptacles for drawing materials, 850., and I do not wish to be understood as laying claim, broadly, to a device for this purpose; but,

What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A case having a drawing-board and a channel or space between the edge of the board and the adjacent side of the case and extending through the rear and front sides of the case, in combination with a lid hinged to the case, said lid being provided with a projection on its hinged edge of a length and thickness I to correspond with the depth and width of the said channel, substantially as set forth.

2. A students drafting-case having a drawing-board, and a groove between said board and the side of the case extending through the rear wall of the latter, as and for the purposesspecified.

8. A case having a drawing-board and a channel or space between the edge of the board and the adjacent side of the case and extending through the rear and front sides of the case, in combination with a lid hinged to the case, said lid being provided with a projection on its hinged edge of a length and thickness to correspond with the depth and width of the said channel, the recess Q, in the rear of the lid, and a pivoted supporting-brace, O, substantially as shown and described.
