I. LANTZ.
GHURN.
Patented Sept. 22
ne@ te@ NITE STATES ATENT rricn.
ISAAc LANTZ, or LANE, KANSAS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,751, dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed December 4, 1883.
T0 all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC LANTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lane, in the county of Franklin and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Hy invention relates to churns; and it consists of the improvements hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation, partly in section, parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a top View of the lid, lever, and rods connecting` with the dashers. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the partition which divides the churn into two compartments. Fig. 4 is a View illustrating the construction of the dashers. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the churnbox, taken on the line x of Fig. l, with the lid and dashers removed.
A represents the body of the churn, to the top of which is closely iitted the lid B, having extensions b, which fit over extensions A of the churn-body, as shown in Fig. 5. These extensions are provided with buttons b, and by means of both the churn-lid is held securely in position. Openings are made inthe churnlid for the passage of the dasherfshafts C, having perforations at their upper ends for the reception of the bent portions of the rods F, whereby they are connected with the operating-lever E, which is mounted on a fulcrum formed by the plates G, having flanges g, by means of which they are secured to the lid B. The flashers C are made to fit closely to all the walls of their respective compartments. Located centrally in the front and back walls of the churn are grooves for the reception of the partition H, having a series of slots and perforations, as shown in Fig. 5. To the lower end of the partition is affixed a transverse piece, I, having its upper surface inclined, and is also provided with a series of small vertical perforations. The sides of the churn are provided with knobs a, for convenience in (No model.)
lifting when necessary to change the position of the churn. The front walls are provided with glass panels D, as shown in Fig. l, in order that the status of the contents may be observed without the necessity of removing the lid. The panels are put in on the same c plan as window-glasses, and the putty makes them fluid-tight. By working the lever E the closely-fitting dashers C, being without the usual perforations, will force the air inclosed in the churn through the cream, and both the 6 air and the cream through the slotted and perforated partition H, whereby an extraordinary agitation will be produced, and the air thus made to perform an active and very efficient part in bringing the butter, and by reason of 6 the peculiarity of the operation the cream will be made to yield a larger quantity of butter than is practicable by the ordinary process. After the butter is made it can be conveniently removed from the churn and the buttermilk 7 by lifting the partition H, and the butter will lodge on the piece I, through the perforations of which the buttermilk will drain.
Having thus explained the construction and operation of my improvement, what I claim 7 as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
Ihe combination, in a churn, of a box or receptacle, a perforated partition, H, arranged centrally therein, and perforated bottom piece, 8 I, located as described, aremovable top and lever, E, centrally pivoted thereon, hooks F, depending from said lever, a dasher, C, arranged at each side of said partition, and provided with a rod or extension passing through 8 the top, and having a series of perforations for the engagement of one of said hooks, the said hooks affording a positive con nection with the lever and rods, but adapted to swing to permit the free relative movements of the le- 9| ver with said rods, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC LANTZ.
