IN VENTOf? UNITED STATES g PATENT OFFICE.
ADRIAN CLOSE, OF WHITEHALL, ILLINOIS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 706,023, dated August 5, 1902.
Application filed February 1'7, 1902. Serial No. 94,504, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADRIAN CLosE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitehall, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in churns of the type known as rocking-body churns; and one object of my invention is the provision of a rocking churn which will be weighted in such manner as to rock'easily and effect the churning with ease and rapidity without fatiguing the operator.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a churn which can be easily taken apart for purposes of repair or cleaning and which will be of compact size to be capable of easy storage and transportation.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a churn which can be made at small cost and which will be of simple, durable, and practical construction.
With these objects in view my invention consists of a rocking-body churn embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my churn. Fig. 2 represents a vertical central sectional View. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of the comb or dasher, and Fig. 4 represents a top plan'view of the comb or dasher.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a pair of rockers connected. by the strips B, each of which carriesa hinged latch O, the purpose of which is to engage the projecting ends D of the bottom E of the churn, and the bottom supports the body of the churn or receptacle F, which is formed with the upwardcurved walls G, which form an apex H at the central portion of the receptacle, and the fiat top portion J of the body is formed with an opening K, which receives the lid or cover L. Secured to the side walls of the body at the central portion are the guide-strips M, in which fit the end rails N of the comb or dasher O, which dasher is composed of the seriesof curved plates P, secured in pairs by means of fastenings Q, and Ihave found by experience that this particular construction of dasher is very effective and insures the best possible results. The churn has the draw-off R.
In operation it is evident that the cream is placed in the receptacle, and motion is imparted to the body by means of the handles,
which by their weight act as a counterbalnal movement after the form of a figure 00 to the cream andalso breaks the cream in a transverse direction, and I have found by experience that the agitation of the cream in this manner-and byreason of the peculiar form of my comb or dasher insures a rapid churning of the cream.
The raised center of my churn bottom in connection with theinvertedcurved plates is a decided advantage,- as 'it causes the butter to gather more quickly: around the plates, enabling the milk to be easily drained off and the butter removed from the plates. I have found by experience that the peculiar form of dasher with the inverted curved plates assures a quickchurning, butter being produced in oneand one-half minutes.
The churn herein shown; and described, consisting of therockers, the strips connecting the rockers near their ends, the fiat board fitting in the space between the end strips, the pivoted latches carried by the strips and engaging the board to secure the board, the receptacle having weighted handles and mounted on said board'and having the bottom Walls raised along their center, the guides adjacent "to said central raised portion, the
dasher having the end pieces fitting in the guides and having the bottom connectingstrip, and the blades secured to the bottom strip and between the said pieces, said blades each composed of a pair of curved plates secured together'and arranged in opposite direction.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADRIAN CLOSE.
