IMPRovEMENT IN cHuRNs.
:Specification forming part of ,Lettere Patent No. 187,476, dated February 20, 1877; application filed January 18, 1877.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLEN L. MCQUARY, of La Belle, in the county of Lewis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ghurns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to an improvement in churns; and consists in the devices hereinafter more specifically described.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a box the bottom and en'ds of which are preferably formed of one piece of sheet metal, the sides of wood or other rigid material, whereby strength, lightness, and facility for cleaning are combined, and also in providing a barrel with plates secured on the ends of hinged arms, so that the plates may be folded inward andprevent the material being splashed over the box.
Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section of a device embodying the elements of the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of same.
In the accompanying drawing, the box A is formed of the single piece ofi sheet metal B,
which composes its bottom and ends, and is attached in a water-tight manner to the rigid sides D, thus forming a box which may easily be repaired or cleaned, and which, at the saine time, possesses great strength. At a suitable place near the upper edge of the inside of the sides D are provided apertures to receive the ends'of the arms E, which ends act as bearings for the remainder of the arm, it being bent at right angles thereto, and carried over and secured to the platev F, the arm being inlet as to the sides of the plate, so that it may readily enter the box when it is depressed. The plate, moreover, is of a size to nicely lill the distance between the sides D, and is secured to the arm at any angle, so that, when depressed, the inclination of the plate shall be toward the central parts of the box.
Itis plain that by this expedient the splash from the churn will be prevented from rising above the plates F, and still that they may easily be swung upward into a position where they can readily be cleaned.
The dasher of the churn consists of a perforated paddle, H, provided. with a handle, I, which works on a movable pivot, L, hung in slots upon each side ofthe upper parts of the sides ofthe box, which is covered by a lid, M, provided with an aperture, through which the handle of the dasher protrudes.
The operation of churning is performed by giving the handle an alternate motion from side to side.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a churn, the plates F and arms E, for y the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the box A, plates F, arms E, and a pendulous dasher, all substantially as set forth; l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in churns, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of January, 187 7.
ALLEN L. MOQUARY.
