UNDERWAIST FOR CHILDREN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,553, dated September 22, 1885.

Application filed June 14, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY J. FLYNN, of Cleveland, Guyahoga county, and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Underwaists for Children; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the shape and construction of that class of under-garments for children known as waists, whereby the use of buttons in fastening the same to the body of the child is dispensed with,the garment being held in place by tapes or strings, at the same time readily adjustable to the size of the child. The use of buttons on garments of this kind for fastening them together has hitherto been a source of annoyance and trouble, as is well known to mothers and nurses.

The immediate object of my improvement is the production, as a new article of manufacture, of an underwaist for children composed of a small number of pieces so arranged as to be put on or off without trouble, and at the same time can be made available for the sup port of skirts, hose, or other under-garments by the use of buttons on the lower margin. These desirable results I accomplish by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- A represents the general form of the body or waist of the proposed garment, and which when tapes E E are tied together.

B B are tabs or ends having tapes E E attached for tying or securing the garment to the waist of the child.

At 0 0 suitable notches are made for armholes, which are to be provided with shoulderstraps for the purpose.

At D a slot is made in the body of the garment,which is to beproperly bound and stayed to prevent enlargement. This slot is for the passage of tab B, when the waist is put around the body of the child so as to produce a close smooth fit without wrinkle or fold These waists may be corded, quilted, orleft plain, to suit the taste of the users.

Having thus fully described my improvement, what I claim as new and of my invention, and which I wish to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new article of manufacture, at waist or under-garment for children, composed of the parts A, B, and B, in the form here given, with tapes E E, armholes O O, and slot D, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
