`PATENT- OEEICE.
OF CANTON, OHIO.
BUNG AND BUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part/of Letters Patent No. 326,127, dated September 15, 1885.
Application filed December 29, 1884. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN KHNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brings and Bushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a top plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 an under side plan view.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in the means employed for securely locking the bung to its bush; andk itconsists in providing a latching device constructed substantiallyas shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the bush, constructed of metal, lwith screw-threads upon its exterior and interipr, and provided with an annular seat, a, for` a suitable packingvring, against which bears the annular rim c of the bung B. This bung is also of metal, and has exterior screw-threads, which engage with the interior screw-threads of the bush.
The bung B has a mortise, d, upon its upper side to receive a suitable wrench or tool i'or inserting or withdrawing it from the bush A, and has a vertical bore near its periphery,
can be turned.
The pin C has an irregular-shaped head, e, at its upper end, and between this head and mortised surface of the bung is placed a packing or washer,f, to render the bore through whichthe pin passes perfectly air-tight.
The opposite or lowerend of the pin C, which projects below the bung, has rigidly secured to it a key, D, and between this key and under surface of the bling is a collar, g, l and washer or packing h, forming together a tightjoint around the pin, and rendering the bung air and water tight around the bore through which the pin passes.
vthe bung from being unscrewed unless the pin was first turned to bring the key in the position shown by'dotted lines, Fig. 2.
The mortise d in the bung B is extended at one of its sides, as shown at Z, to make room for the projecting head of the pin O and not interfere with the wrench when inserted in the mortise to unscrew the bung from the bushing, also to admit ota wrench being applied to the head of the pin for turning it.
The head e is preferably formed diamond shape, one end being slightly longer than the other, so as to project ashort distance over the washer f. When the head has its longer end in a position toward the center of the bung,as shown, the key projects beyond the exterior of the bush and strikes against the lug thereon, thus preventing the bung from being unscrewed. I
Ihebung is shownlocked. To unlock it, ap ply asmall socket-wrench to the head e ofpin C and turn the key away from the lug until it is Wholly within the bushing A. Then,`wth a wrench seated in the aperture d,turn the bung B in the opposite direction, screwing it out ot' the bush.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy 1. A bush interiorly threadedand provided with an annular seat aud a bung exteriorly threaded to coincide with the interior 0f the bush, and provided with an annular flange corresponding to the seat in the bush, in combif nation with a pin carrying a locking-latch to lock the bung and bush togetherwhen the flange of the bung is drawn in close cont-act with the seat of the bush by the threads, substantially as described.
2. The bushA, interiorly threaded and providedwith an annular seat and a depending lng, in combination with the bung B, exte e In testimony that I claim the above I have liorly threaded and provided with ari-annular hereunto subscribed my name inthe presence lo flange coinciding with the seat of the bnsh, and of two Witnesses.
a pin passing vertically through the hung and 5 p1 ovded on its upper end with an irregnlar- CHRISTIAN KUHNER shaped head and on its lower end with a latch Titnesses: to engage the lug of the bush, substantially as. RUDOLPH LEONHART,
and for the purposes specified. LOUIS SPECK.
