UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
JEROME DOUGLASS, OF BLAIRS CORNERS, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN LOCK STOP-COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,321, dated July 21, 1874; application filed May 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME DOUGLASS, of Blairs Corners, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Lock Stop-(lock, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to adevice for securing a stop-cock or valve, to prevent it from being improperly turned or otherwise tampered with.
The invention consists in the combination of a valve-plug, having its smaller end fiattcned, a cap formed with an opening for engagement with said flattened end, and pins or studs for engagement with holes in the valveseat, to prevent the plug from turning, and a lock for engagement with the cap and the flattened end of the plug, to prevent the removal of the cap, all as hereinafter particularly described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1' is a central longitudinal section of a valve and seat with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the plug and cap.
This locking device is applicable to cocks and valves of any suitable construction. The drawing represents an ordinary two-waycock, B, and seat O, applied to a pipe, D. The end of the plug B is provided with a head for turning it by a suitable tool, and the other end is flattened for engagement with the locking device. E is a cap, of concavo-convex and circular or approximate form, in the bottom or outer portion of which is an opening corre sponding in form with the flattened outer end of the plug B, and from the face of which extend two pins or studs, 0 e, for engagement with holes f in a rim or flange formed on the pipe outside of the seat 0. There are four of these holes, placed equidistant from each other, and the pins or studs 0 are diametrically opposite each other, so that when the cap is in one position the pins engage with two of the holes, and when in the other position they engage with the intermediate two.
The cap E may have a washer interposed between it and the seat, and when the plug is secured by a nut the cap serves as a lock to prevent the nut from turning. The flattened portion of the plug has a hole formed in it ot suitable form and size to receive the bow of a padlock, G, and the portion of the cap which covers said flattened end is formed with recesses to admit said bow.
By means of the cap 0 the plug may be locked in either a closed or open position, and by means of the lock G the cap is secured and prevented from improper displacement.
I do not claim, broadly, the application to a stop-cock or valve of a device to prevent the plug from being improperly turned or otherwise tampered with.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the plug B and seat 0, of the cap E, formed with an opening for engagement with the flattened end of the plug,
and pins or studs 0 for engagement with holes f in the seat, and the lock G engaging with the plug and cap, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
