SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,102, dated September 15, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. BUR- ROUGHS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Worth, in the county of Tar-rant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Center or other Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of referenoe marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a side elevation of a center-table, partlyin section to show the manner of attaching the legs to the standard and table-top; Fig. 2, a detail view in perspective of the lower end of the standard, and

Fig. 3 a similar view of that portion of the leg of the table adapted for attachment to the standard.

The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements 'in the means for securely attaching the legs to the standards of center or other tables; and it consists in the details of construction, substan tially as shown in the drawings -and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, I have shown,

for convenience of illustrating my invention, a center-table, A being the top thereof, B the central standard, and O the legs extending radially therefrom.

The standard B at its lower end has slotsa cut or otherwise formed therein in number to correspond with the number of legs used, depending entirely upon the form and style of table.

In the present instance I have shown a table in which four legs are used, and the lower end of the standard with four sides, each of which has a slot extending lengthwise thereof.

Extending across the slots a, near their lower ends, are rods b, and with these rods engage hooks D, which increase in width to- 5 ward their upper end to form a cam to draw the leg tightly against the side of the standard.

In constructing the hooks D, I prefer to form them with a plate, 0, which is seated in a slot in the leg, and has perforations to receive pins or rivets d as ameans of fastening them to the leg.

The invention is equally applicable to all classes of tables having a standard for attaching the legs, also piano and other stools, and like pieces of furniture, and, if preferred, the hooks may be on the standard and the slots and rods on the legs.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A table-top or other like article of furniture having a central standard provided at or near its lower end with slots and rods extending across the same, in combination with supporting-legs provided with hooks adapted to engage with the slots and rods, substantially as and forthe purpose set forth.

2. In a table, stool, or other like article of furniture, thecombination, with a slotted stan dard and rods extending across the slots, of the legs having dowel-pins entering holes in the under side of the table-top, and cam-shaped hooks connected to the legs and engaging with the slots and rods of the standard, as and for the purpose specified.
