UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
RICHARD CARTER FAY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
PEN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.-325.921, dated September 8, 1885.
Application tiled June 11, 1885.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD CARTER FAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and use ful Finger-Rest for Pen-Holders and Artists Brushes, 850., the construction of which is substantially illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specification.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 shows a plan or top view of the finger-rest A in position on a pen-holder. Fig. 2 shows the right-hand side of a pen-holder, with position of finger-rest A. Fig. 3 is a section of the finger-rest A.
The description is as follows: The fingerrestAis secured to a penholder, B, or artists brush, &c., in the position as shown in draw ings, forming an easy rest for the first and secondfingers in writing or painting. The fingerrest A may be made of any suitable metal and nickel-plated, and is formed of a single piece having parallel sides and rounded ends, and so bent as to form grooves a parallel to the holder. The said piece is secured obliquely (No model.)
to the holder, as shown in Fig. 1, and also the side of a line drawn through the center of the pen-holder opening and the holder, so that one portion of the said rest is lower when the holder is held in position than the other. (See Fig. 3.)
For pen-holders made of hard rubber the finger-rest A may be formed by casting.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is- 1. A pen-holder for a pen or brush handle, having a finger-rest composed of a single piece of metal having parallel sides and rounded ends, secured obliquely to the said holder, and having grooves parallel thereto, substantially as shown and described.
2. A holder having a finger-rest composed of a single piece of metal having grooves parallel to said holder, the said rest being secured obliquely to the holder, and also having a portion thereof on one side of the holder extending below the portion on the other-side thereof, substantially as described.
. RICHARD CARTER FAY.
