Description

June 21, 1966 A. B. SMITH 3,257,049
COAT HANGER Filed May 11, 1964 I NVE N TOR. 445527 5422) SM/fi/ ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,257,049 COAT HANGER Albert Barry Smith, Phoenix, Ariz., assignor to Smith- Lerner Industries, Inc., Phoenix, Ariz., a corporation of Arizona Filed May 11, 1964, Ser. No. 372,444. 3 Claims. (Cl. 223-88) This invention pertains to clothes carrying devices and is particularly directed to an improved coat hanger.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide an improved coat hanger that is light in weight and sturdy and durable in use.
Another object is to provide a coat hanger of Styrafoam-like materials utilizing a minimum of metallic parts in the complete coat hanger.
Still another object is to provide a coat hanger of full body shape and size in contrast to wire hangers so as to properly hang clothes without deforming the garments with sharp edges in contact with the garments.
A further object is to provide a coat hanger that is easy to grasp, both loaded and unloaded.
And it is also an object to provide a coat hanger formed of two elements adhesively held together with the hanger hook and other reinforcing element clamped between the elements when assembled together.
Further features and advantages of this invention will appear from a detailed description of the drawings in which:
'FIG. 1 is a side elevation of the assembled and completed coat hanger.
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the coat hanger shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is an end elevation of the coat hanger shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is an exploded isometric view showing the elements forming the coat hanger of FIGS. 1 to 3.
FIG. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a portion of one of the elements and reinforcing forming the coat hanger.
As an example of one embodiment of this invention there is shown a coat hanger comprising two hanger elements and 11, preferably identical in construction and configuration comprising the shoulder portions 12 and 13 and the pants rail 14 all integrally formed together. Each of the elements 10 and 11 have flat inner surfaces 15. a
The hanger hook 16 has a vertically disposed shank 17 terminating in a sloping portion 18 and a horizontally disposed bent-over portion 19. A groove 20 is formed in each of the hanger elements 10 and 11 consisting of a vertically disposed part 21, two downwardly diverging sloping parts 22, and a horizontally disposed part 23. The part 21 of groove 20 is adapted to receive the lower end of the shank 17 of the hook 16 while the parts 22 and 23 are adapted to receive the portions 18 and 19 of the hook 16 irrespective of which way the hook is turned. The two elements with the hook placed in the groove 20 are coated with suitable adhesive on their inner surface and pressed together to form an integral hanger structure with the hook 16 secured thereto.
The elements 10 and 11 may be formed either with solid continuous inner surfaces or their surfaces may contain a series of recesses or cavities 24 having ribs 25, the outer edges of which are aligned on both elements when the elements are adhesively pressed together at the parting line 26, such ribs and cavity arrangement providing lighter weight with less material while maintaining the necessary rigidity for the hanger when assembled.
"ice
In certain instances it may be desirable to provide additional reinforcing for the pants rail 14 which may take the form of a reinforcing rod 27 of suitable material extending at the parting 26 to each end of the pants rail 14 to the points 28 and 29, FIG. 1. In still another arrangement of this reinforcing rod it may curve and slope upwardly at 30 terminating at 31 within the shoulder portions 12 and 13 of the hanger.
While the apparatus herein disclosed and described constitutes a preferred form of the invention, it is also to be understood that the apparatus is capable of mechanical alteration without departing from the spirit of the inven tion and that such mechanical arrangement and commercial adaptation as fall within the scope of the appended claims are intended to be included herein.
Having thus fully set forth and described this invention what is claimed and desired to be obtained by United States Letters Patent is:
